My boss is currently running Windows XP. He has been absolutely refusing to upgrade to 7, because he is afraid of losing his current files. He has stuff stashed all over his drive and has not had a clean install since 2001. I have finally convinced him to get 7 based on this alone... Buy a new hard drive and install 7 on it, and set his current drive up as a secondary drive. Now to the question, will he have any problems accessing his old files from the Windows platform with Windows XP still installed on the other drive?

At most he may need to take ownership of the files, but that is a very easy task to accomplish..

Unplug the XP drive during Win7 install. Boot from the DVD, select Custom install, use Advanced drive tools to format the new HD before install.

Keep ethernet plugged and select "connect to internet during install" to get latest updates/drivers into installer, then more will arrive via Windows Updates. Any missing driver in Device Manager can be found on Support Downloads page for your model computer, as can favorite apps you need.

When you plug the XP drive back in, if it interferes in any way with the Win7 drive booting, then use free Partition Wizard bootable CD to Modify> Set Inactive the XP HD.
