Needed to uninstall Chrome completely; reinstalled version won't run

I had (have?) a rogue search engine on my system highly problematic to remove, so was advised elsewhere to remove Chrome with Revo, after which I used CCleaner. By both processes I thought Chrome would be no more.

I reinstalled Chrome, downloading from Google not a third party. Installation succeeded but Chrome is unusable. I attempt to sign in, I am directed to https://accounts.google.com/Service...gle.com/intl/en-US/chrome/blank.html?source=1
but after a while "Web page not available" appears. Attempts to link to other web sites result in similar failure.

I have looked in the Google product forums, where of late very like questions have been asked, and have received scant or no replies. Therefore my questions are:

have I done enough to completely, utterly remove the old version, and if not what more should I do:
if my un-installation was sufficient, why I the reinstalled application failing to run?

Please, what can I do to make it run? Ideas, please, friends!

Good question! But judging from the number of cleaners and all sorts of things run on advice of the Bleeping Computer site, I would hope the system is clean. But who can ever be sure with malwares' skills at disguise?

I'd say thats OK then. Did they get you to run something to flush/reset your DNS?

Not sure, but ATM I cannot log in to that site. Maybe I'd should do that now?

I should say that the problem is that either I am told no user name has been input or the password is incorrect. I am trying to sort that out with BC's customer service/admin.

Asked to remove Chrome with Revo uninstaller

Reinstallation brought about the current problem and assistance was sort by rep from another

His advice:

Close all Chrome windows and tabs.
Go to the Start menu > Control Panel. (Windows 8 users: Learn how to access the Control Panel)
Click Programs and Features.
Double-click Google Chrome.
Click Uninstall from the confirmation dialog. Delete your user profile information, like your browser preferences, bookmarks, and history, by selecting the "Also delete your browsing data" checkbox.

Install fresh copy.

You can use ANY browser to download "FixIt" file.
Make sure you follow ALL steps listed there.

thats a pretty extensive list mate, chances are your not infected mate

They covered everything by the looks of it.....including resetting the HOSTS file and flushing the DNS cache in case it was poisoned. Did anything they asked you to run actually locate any malware?

I'll have a look at the various reports to see if I can recognise anything dealt with, but it will take some time.

You might try logging in in Safe Mode with Networking to see if that works. If it does work, you know you have a conflict and could try a clean start to see if you can locate the conflict.

Malware can run in safe mode, but I think if anything, the malware would be gone, and you could be dealing with remnants. The people at Bleeping Computer are very good at what they do.

Are you having any other internet issues? Internet Explorer works correctly?

In a fit of "stuff it" I got out my external drive, backed up my files, used a recent system image I had made, then re installed the files.

Chrome now works, but of course I'm left with quite a bit to do.

Thanks folk for your advice.

BTW can the folders for Program Files and Program Files X86 in Windows old be safely used to reinstall applications on the system as it is now, or is it better to load them from new downloads?
