Nero 9 DVD-R Finalization

Nero 9 suddenly won't finalize DVD-R burning, but finalizes DVD-RW OK. Reinstalled Nero 9 cleanly twice, but no fix. Other burning programs, including Windows 7, finalize OK.

When Nero completes lead-out, drives continue to spin and won't shut down or eject without a hard restart. Surprisingly, the DVD-Rs burned play OK!

Running Pioneer BDR-203 burners using original firmware on Windows 7 64-bit. Windows 7 updated with all recent patches, but not SP1 due to conflict with iTunes. Both drives behave the same separately or burning in tandem.

Has anything changed in Windows that could affect this?

Have you been trying the same brand DVD-Rs?

By the way, SP1 issues with iTunes were grossly overstated, and there's been several new revisions to iTunes since SP1 was released. I wouldn't hold my OS back for one piece of crap software...so if I really had an issue, I'd upgrade to SP1 and use Media Monkey for the time being.

Two different brands of DVD-Rs, same behavior. Both worked fine until very recently. DVD-RWs finalize OK. As far as changes, I don't even recall a Windows Update in the interim. Just wondering if others have seen this behavior with Nero on Windows 7.

Off topic: the iTunes issue didn't affect everyone, but it I don't consider it overblown when it unexpectedly disables an important application. After SP1, my iPod connection would freeze iTunes and no more synching possible for music, photos - anything.

Fortunately I was able to uninstall SP1 which I doubt I needed anyway because SP1 supposedly just incorporates prior patches (it obviously did more than that). My machine immediately became happy again with iTunes and my computer hasn't suffered without SP1.

Have you loaded any other burning or virtual drive software recently?

The second reason I called them overblown is because they've been all but rectified. iTunes is still a steaming pile of crap, but it works. I also would never jeopardize my system's updates over iTunes.

Excellent - two topics in one thread!

1) No new burning software, but I have had Burnaware Pro for over a year and still use it, especially now with Nero acting up.

2) I did upgrade iTunes to a new version a couple of weeks after the SP1 event but I didn't have the heart to try the SP1 again for fear of hosing my iTunes setup. Is it your opinion that the current iTunes version was fixed to avoid the SP1 issue?

PS: You obviously don't loves iTunes so I extra-appreciate your time to respond to that particular issue. I have two reasons that are fairly compelling to stick with iTunes: 1) iPod/iPhone synch, 2) Mezzmo wireless DLNA media server, which automatically serves iTunes playlists to my entertainment center.

Further to iTunes vs. SP1

iTunes 10.3.1.55 upgrade on June 12 did not work with SP1 upgrade on my x64 system. After SP1, connecting iPod Touch freezes iTunes, just as iTunes 10.2.x did. Fortunately System Restore came to the rescue - twice with two failed attempts.

I'm back to pre-SP1 but at least all of my programs still work.

Has anyone figured out the issue? I read somewhere that this had something to do with USB services with not all incidences of the service being updated when SP1 is installed. Anything new on this?
