Net based programs like Steam causing problems for Firefox

OK, really not sure if this is the right place to post this (because I have no clue what is happening) but over the last few days (maybe coincidentally since the last Windows update) whenever I open a Steam app then close it, Firefox takes forever to open a page (loads fine, just doesn't open anything), and even if I try opening a Steam app again I get 'failed connection' or equivalent. I have to reboot to open Firefox again (or Steam).
I've checked everything I can think of; processes, port allocation, anti-virus (I use Avast)... I've run CCleaner, Malwarebytes, Spybot S&D... I've updated (or checked updates) for graphics drivers, even Java, and nothing. I've run out of places to look! It is getting really annoying. Any help appreciated.

Have you tried uninstalling Steam and then reinstalling it? Same for F.F.? Does it do this with any other browser?

Hi, and thanks for the response. I've isolated the problem to a game launched from Steam rather than Steam itself. I've tested Steam alone and it doesn't cause the problems, but if I launch the game from the .exe (bypassing the Steam launcher) the symptoms occur. Firefox just updated itself with a full over write, but the issue is continuing. I'm in contact with the game developers and they're looking into it. I'll keep this thread open for a bit longer, but it's looking far less like a Windows 7 problem than it did at first.
