At over seven months since it provided the first compatibility info resource for the next iteration of the .Net Framework, Microsoft is making available for download a list featuring known migration issues in the Beta 2 development milestone of the technology. Compatibility information related to .NET Framework 4 is essential to developers leveraging the Beta 2 Build which need to test their applications in order to ensure that they will continue to work properly.
“The migration issue list for Beta 2 is now available. This list includes everything in the Beta 1 list, plus any new issues discovered or added to the product between Beta 1 and Beta 2,” revealed a member of the .NET Framework Compatibility team. “Once again, thanks for trying out .NET Framework 4 and helping us make it the most compatible release possible.”
.NET Framework 4 Beta 2 was released to the public in October 2009, concomitantly with Visual Studio 2010 Beta. At that time, Microsoft noted that it was planning to release its next generation development platform and tools on March 22nd, 2010. This date is no longer valid, as the deadline was postponed by a few weeks. In February 2010, the software giant will make available a Release Candidate of Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4 designed to further test performance improvements delivered to VS.

Just to be clear, the promise from Microsoft is that .NET Framework 4 was built to deliver full backward compatibility with previous versions of the .NET Framework. But while this is the general rule, there are inherent exceptions which developers should be aware of. According to the Redmond company, the vast majority of applications and components built by leveraging previous versions will also run on .NET Framework 4 with no issues. For those that won’t, Microsoft is offering the .NET Framework 4 Beta 2 migration issues list. “The migration issue list for Beta 2 is now available.
