I am one of the users who keep on updating Windows manually time to time. One update troubling me is "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Security Update for Windows 7 x86 (KB979916). It constantly fails to install whereas my PC meets all requirements. I also tried manual installation but couldnt find one to download. This is not for first time it failed its more than 30 time i tried.

Please help.

If reset does not help then go to steps below.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When you try to install an update for the .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, or 3.5, you may receive Windows Update error code "0x643" or Windows Installer error code "1603"

I followed that link to here.
When you try to install an update for the .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, or 3.5, you may receive Windows Update error code "0x643" or Windows Installer error code "1603"

Method 2: Repair the .NET Framework
To repair the .NET Framework, you must uninstall multiple versions of the .NET Framework by using the .NET Framework Cleanup Tool, and then reinstall the components.

To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click the following link to download the .NET Framework Cleanup Tool: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/08/28/8904493.aspx (.NET Framework Cleanup Tool User's Guide - Aaron Stebner's WebLog - Site Home - MSDN Blogs)
  2. Use the .NET Framework Cleanup Tool to uninstall the .NET Framework versions 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5
Note The cleanup tool does not let you remove the .NET Framework 2.0 in Windows Vista or later versions because the .NET Framework is installed as an operating system component.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Download and install the following components:
  5. Restart the computer.
  6. Visit the Windows Update Web site and install the updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com (Microsoft Windows Update)
Might be the easiet to start from scratch as above.
We don't know what is missing or damaged.

NET Framework Cleanup Tool does not work on built-in NET Framework versions (3.5 is a part of system

Not all of the above products will appear in the UI for the .NET Framework cleanup tool on every operating system. The cleanup tool contains logic so that if it is run on an OS version that includes the .NET Framework as an OS component, it will not offer the option to clean it up. This means that running the cleanup tool on Windows XP Media Center Edition or Tablet PC Edition will not offer the option to clean up the .NET Framework 1.0, running it on Windows Server 2003 will not offer the option to clean up the .NET Framework 1.1 and running it on Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 will not offer the option to clean up the .NET Framework 2.0 or the .NET Framework 3.0.

Make sure you don't have any hexadecimal folder on any partition - hexadecimal folder -folder which name consist with hexadecimal number.Such kind of folders can be only directly on partitions not in any subfolders. If you have such kind of folder then remove it
