netbook wifi painfully slow

I have a Samsung NC10 with W7 installed (build 7264).

My wifi has always been fine, fairly speedy for a netbook. However, now that I'm overseas in the middle east at this time, its very slow specifically for me.

I'm connected to a cable connection. My two friends are upstairs and their connection on their notebooks [not netbooks] using Vista is very speedy for them, on wifi. I'm 2 feet away from the router myself. Its a Dlink DIR-300 w/ latest firmware.

I have the latest Atheros wifi drivers installed via windows update. I even tried the XP drivers via Samsungs site. Same problem, cruising at 10-20kb per second on average. Very slow. Replicated in IE8 and Firefox 3.5.1

I even tried the TCPZ tool as well. Did nothing.

Any ideas?

Nothing to do with your gear -- the problem will be on the server / provider end.

Especially in some countries where "piracy" is endemic you might be sharing a relatively slow connection with 100's of people downloading the latest leaked (7600) build of W7 or latest leaked movie DVD's

Just "Grin and bear it", find another wifi hotspot or logon at sometime when its less busy.#

In any case if you've got multiple users sharing a cheap domestic router -- especially if they are using Cabled / WIRED access then your WiFi link will be seriously hobbled.

Most cheap domestic routers tend to have 4 wired and a wifi connection.

Check also that the wifi part of the router can transmit at 801-g (54 mbs) -- you might find the router wifi is set to tranmit at the "glacially slow speed" of 10 mbs (801-b).

Dial in with another #??? I said I'm on *cable*. I did not see it was shared with other people, only two friends on the same router which is not something that should cause my speed to drop to 20kbps, especially when they're not even logged on the net.

How do you figure its the server/provider's end when I clearly said my two friends on the same router do not have this issue?

You're not making any sense.

this really sounds like you are using a 802.11b configured router or a low bandwith from the netbook to the router...
can you check like jimbo suggested whether you are connected either on 802.11g/b/a?
also are you using WPA2-CCMP (also know as AES) or WPA-Tkip?
if they the notebooks are wired and they are downloading large files then the connection is bound to be slow
also have you checked whether you change and use a RJ-45(ethernet cable) helps?
