Network access but no internet

I left work and left instructions for the owner to do what I was going to do.

I hope he will be able to connect at home, or I will be in REAL trouble.

I think when he tries to connect at home on his saved network, it will work. What do you think?

Neither would link to anything. I hope he will be able to connect at home. He connects wirelessly only.

Now I am home on my laptop and everything is normal. I made the mistake when I clicked "public" I guess. I don't see why it prevented internet access. I enabled network discovery first thing. If you have seen problems on Vista....I'm sue I was having the same problem

Aww... I missed the whole fun by an hour...

The basic to make a computer connect to the "Internet" is to make sure that it has a "Default Gateway", simply put, it's saying to Windows that it should ask "Default Gateway" for all network requests other than LAN requests. Next is to make sure that Windows understands "www.yahoo.com" by telling Windows which DNS server to use. DNS servers are the one that resolves "www.something.com" => 70.xx.yy.zz, by then you can connect (computers are stupid, they work by numbers).

nate42nd, all you needed was make sure that the wifi interface have "Default Gateway" set out, and it must point to the same "Default Gateway" as other computers on the network. Once you done that, you should check the DNS server entries too, make sure DNS server on the problematic laptop has the same DNS server as other computers do... By then it should connect to the net, no matter what (unless you deliberately deny every incoming traffic anywhere but LAN...).

something I just came across I was not aware of is in action center under security there is network access protection mine is turned off here is what it says about it

Network Access Protection (NAP) is a platform that network administrators can use to help protect the security of a network. When you connect to a corporate network that uses NAP, your computer is checked to make sure that it has the required software and settings, and that the software and settings are up to date. If anything is missing or outdated, your computer can be automatically updated. Your network access might be limited during that time, but usually this process happens quickly, after which full network access is restored.

I'd get the basics down first before getting to the "gray" area, most common "Internet doesn't work" problem is no default gateway. Then the next is no DNS server (it connects to the internet, but can't understand domain names like www.sevenforums.com). When we can get the basics down right, then we can look elsewhere. My internetworking teacher once told me (he's a CCIE btw), "Get the basics right, trace from bottom going upward [in 7 OSI layer stack]". I held by that words till today, and it saved my arse way too many times

This was apparently a kids computer. He has been linking with an X-box. I connected 3 others of the same model exactly. The only difference was he had another network to the x-box. I am thinking this may have something to do with it also.

I don't have the knowledge (yet) it takes to do this stuff. Also, it's an office building and I don't have access to the network hardware.......I have a lot to learn.

By the way, you don't need to have access to the building's network hardware to solve such simple problem, if there are other computers can join and use the internet, you only need to "copy" several of it's configurations to make the odd one work...

Once kids get involved all bets are off. He probably had ICS enabled or who knows what else. The word Sabotage comes to mind.

I am embarrassed because of this. I will "lay low" for now and hope I didn't screw his settings up too bad. I just hope he can connect at home. I hope the one or two settings I changed will not prevent him form connecting at hoime.
