In an effort to expand on my education, I plan on building my own NAS. Since this is my first I thought I would ask those who have gone before me. Need input on what boxes are good, what hard drives are good, a good place to purchase from, and any other input you may have. I will probably start out with two 2T drives (RAID) but would like to expand that at a later time. Also, what software to use. I plan on experimenting with scheduled data backups as well as scheduled images. I will be backing up 7, 8.1, and 10 PCs. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the response samuria. I have heard others talk about FreeNas. I recently spoke with someone who built their own. They bought the case and only needed to insert drives. it was a Lenovo ix4-300i. Seems it is a thing of the past because they are out of stock in reputable sites. I will keep looking for a case with 4 slots. Will start with 2 drives but will expand to a total of 4 drives later.
