I have a 2TB in my desktop that i use for backups. I have my desktop backed up onto it and my usb drives. I am using acronis so that i can create an image backup and i am trying to save it onto the network drive.

The folder is shared using the advanced settings. When i select the network location in acronis to save the backup it asks for the password, i type in my user name for my desktop but i dont have a password set. It wont let me continue without typing a passcode in. But there is none.

Do i have to define a password to use network shares?

Hello xboxhaxorz

Can you tell us if you are using homegroup for networking?
It will prompt you for a password upon installation. In fact Homegroup requires a password.

You can check by opening Network and Sharing Center and looking under "view active networks". It will either say home network, or work network.

Homegroup uses IPV6 and is designed for windows 7 networks. Work Network uses IPV4 and can have mixed OS'es.

That may be the password your network share is looking for.

I did setup a homegroup, and i used the password on the laptop. BUT i find out that you can not share drive letters with homegroup so i then used the advanced sharing.

try adding "System" and/or the "Everyone" group to the drive or folder you are storing these backups.
Change the ACL for System and the Everyone group to: Full Control

i think its an acronis problem because i can access the folder through the network and i copied a file over. will try an earlier version of acronis.
