Well your router needs to be setup with only one of those types of connections.

If setup with DHCP, it'll get the settings off your ISP via your modem. No need to input anything. Question is if your ports are fine, cables are correct, then it will boil down to your ISP, through the modem no questions there.

Can you provide ipconfig detail?

If everything is working with your XP machines and was working untill you installed windows 7 the settings in router won't matter the problem is with that machine.

He only installed a new OS, the hardware are the same, so if the devices in Device Manager are all good, then it's not the machine.

Something in the configuration on that machine, if other machines on the same network are able to access the internet then it's not the router or modem the only thing it leads me to believe is if the network is setup to use static IP's after the install of Windows 7 he would need to apply a static IP in his IP range to the ethernet adapter on that machine

Check Your Other Machines

Check your other machines TCP/IP properties and see if they are using static IP's if so pick an IP address that is not being used that would be next in line example 192.168.1.112 pick like 192.168.1.113 you get the idea

The IP is not static (finally found out how to check it, sorry for my comment earlier this morning) and is automaticly chosen, same for the DNS.

So basically you are trying to connect to your router via ethernat, but you aint getting internet access. If your router is getting it's IP via DHCP - auto config (which links to your modem and ISP -there are particular IP details that the router picks up from your ISP eg DNS, and these are filled out automatically somewhere in your router's control panel), then it should route the connection to you machines. Your router should have been setup with a default local ip, say 192.168.1.1. Your router should also be your default gateway. Any ip you get from connecting to your router, whether wireless or wired, should be allocated by your router, which is greater than 192.168.1.1.

Anyway, can you give details of ipconfig pls.

There is no doubt that you have a cable or port issue.

Do you have another machine/laptop? if so can you test the cable by plugging it into that.

If the cable and port are all good, you will not get unplugged details, rather unidentified network.

Cable works fine (internetting on it right now), but as sad when connnecting directly trough the modem, i get an unidentified network error rather then a cable unplugged error

So you are internetting, via cable to router? And when you cable to modem, it doesn't work?

it doesn't work either way (sorry for being unclear )

when i try to connect trough the router, i get the cable unplugged error and i cannot connect to other computers in the netwerk or internet
when i try to skip the router, so connect directly to the modem i get an unidentified network error, so i cannot connect to the internet.

also the router doesnt recognise my computer when looking at multi dmz, it says unkown (192.168.0.2) wich would be my computer

it looks like it is not recognizing the cable i put in, because nothing happens when i put the cable in it, not on the router and not on the computer (when trying to connect trough the router),

my dads computer, with windows xp trough the same router as the windows 7 computer that i try to connect.


before i installed windows 7 on my computer, it had xp on it. the Internet worked on xp, now, with windows 7 Internet (and LAN) don't work (there are 4 computers connecting to the router, one with windows 7, three with windows xp. the ones with xp work)
