hi thanks for looking and i appreciate your help. i am running windows 7 laptop
(client) and a windows xp desktop (server). I have setup the network wizard on both computers and have disabled firewalls and permitted full access to ftp and remote connections. I am on home network settings and have a yahoo dsl modem and a netgear n router. The problem is at first i am able to see my network in the network folder and am able to access my files and folders at first, but after about 1o minutes the connection drops and i get a message saying windows cannot access \\computername\folder ETc. My internet still works and never drops , only me network. please any advice or reccomendations?

Have you tried messing with the power options of your network adaptor? Try turning off the hibernate and sleep functions of the adaptor in power options and in device manager for this connection.
