Hello,
I am using Windows 7 Home Premium on a Toshiba Laptop. When I connect a network cable, it detects it but I have no Internet connection. Internet protection is off and windows firewall is off. There are no driver issues with the network hardware. What would be causing this problem please?
Thank you.

Hi scorpion09, welcome to sevenforums. Do you see an icon in the systemtray that looks like a monitor with a plug on it when the cable is connected. If so, right click on it and opt to troubleshoot the connection and see what it comes up with.

wilywombat, I went through the troubleshooter, nothing helped. I also did a renew / release in ipconfig. Still the same issue. I also went through the connectivity doctor (LAN Connected), it also says there is a connection, but still cannot access ANY web sites? What else could be causing this problem please?

Hello,

Click on Start => in run or search box type cmd, choose run as Admin and press enter. Open up a command prompt then Copy and Paste these ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt . Please attach the .txt file to be found in your Local Disk 'C' on your next post.

Thanks for the output. The LAN connection is showing working IP's. Is your wireless connection working?

Pls. check your browser setting and remove any Proxy if found.
How to Remove a Proxy Server | eHow.com

Restart your computer and tap F8, select Safe Mode with Networking. Are you able to connect to the internet?

Log on as a different User or create one of needed from Control Panel=> User Accounts. See if you can browser the internet using the new User Account.

If none of the above works, uninstall the device from Device Manager, locate Atheros right click on it and select uninstall, reboot your computer and see if your computer will auto detect and reinstall the Atheros Driver. You may also download the latest driver from the Atheros site.

An update will be appreciated.

I rebooted into safe mode with netwotking I could access the internet. Adding a new user gives the same no internet access problem. There are no proxy settings within internet explorer. The wirless isn't working either. I uninstalled the adaptor and reinstalled it using the web site drivers. Still no internet access with a network connection. What else could be causing this issue please? Thank you.

Internet connection - unidentified network solution
I've been on Win 7 64bit for a week and was able to solve the unidentified network issue within a day. Your circumstances may be different but this is what I did:

Go to Microsoft support and look-up Article ID: 929852.
How to disable certain Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) components in Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008

I chose to fix it myself. This is a registry edit that's fairly simple and straight forward if you follow the directions.

I chose option #B:
Type 0xffffffff to disable all IPv6 components, except the IPv6 loopback interface. This value also configures Windows Vista to use Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) instead of IPv6 in prefix policies.

Another part of the puzzle was that my computer was connected via ethernet cable directly to my Uverse 2Wire RG router. (Basically bypassed one of my switches in hopes of faster connection speeds) I unplugged my direct connection and plugged into my 8 port switch, restarted and viola, no more issues!

So... if you're plugged directly into your router you might want to try a switch as a middleman and the registry edit if that doesn't fix it.

Good luck!

Jalarebel, thank you for responce, BUT how can this issue be related to the registry? Can any one else comment on this please? I dont really wanna go stuffing around with registry. I'm running a direct network connection from bigpond modem to laptop. Thank you.

Good to hear that you're able to connect on Safe Mode with Networking. Could be a Malware/Spyware or Anti Virus/Security Software blocking your connection when booted up in Normal Mode.

What type of Security/Anti Virus Software do you have installed?

Pls try the following recommendations:
Install and run Free Malwarebytes:
Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware, anti-virus and spyware removal download

Reset TCP/IP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357
Reset Winsock corruption:http://windows7themes.net/repair-reset-winsock-windows-7.html

You shd consider uninstalling it for now, what is your Security Software? If it's McAfee or Norton make sure to use the Removal Tool to remove all remnants.

I turned the laptop on and a window come up about removing nortons, so I thought what the heck. I completely uninstalled it rebooted and network connection was still good, so I thought I'd try the internet, the internet worked. I think because the nortons was in the middle of installing/uninstalling was causing the internet not to be accessed. I will reinstall nortons "myself" this time. Thank you everyone.
Issue Resolved.

One of the top suspects - Norton :)

Glad it's all sorted. You're Welcome.
