Hi

System:
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
Acer Aspire 5820T

Hard drive blew so had to replace it and reinstall windows, however these two devices Network Controller and PCI Simple Communications Controller issues are not installed correctly with error message in Device Manager of (Code 28) for both.

I have installed all appropriate drivers from Download

these being:

Chipset Intel Chipset Driver 9.1.1.1024 2.3 MB 2010/04/08
Lan Atheros LAN Driver 1.0.0.33 4.6 MB 2010/06/23
Modem LSI Modem Driver 2.1.94 1.4 MB 2010/04/08
Wireless LAN Atheros Wireless LAN Driver 8.0.0.259 21.1 MB 2010/04/08

However the only device that was activated correctly after installing these was the Network Adaptor.

I therefore have no internet on this machine due to these two devices not being activated.

Please help.

I have phoned Acer but unless I go to there Premium support number at 50p/min, they can't help me.

Hello badbud65. Welcome to the Forum.

Are you sure your wireless LAN device is Atheros and not a Broadcom or Intel?

Did you install this?:
Card Reader Alcor Card Reader Driver 1.2.17.05001 6.7 MB 2010/04/08

Yes Installed card reader no joy, in fact I've installed all the drivers on the site.

And now I have al sorts of conflicts, as I've installed drivers that I shouldn't have, so will start all over again.

Then report back where I got to.

Curious: Have you been checking Windows Update? That website says they only offer drivers not included in Windows 7. A long shot, for sure, but just checking.

And yes, driver conflicts can cause lots of problems. You need to know exactly what components are in your PC and only install the drivers for those components .

Formatted and reinstalled Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, haven't installed any drivers at all, using a FOB to connect to Internet and have only done Windows updates and nothing else yet.

The only issue that remains is the 'Network Controller' isn't being installed now.

My Network Adaptor that has been installed is

'Atheros AR8151 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller' so I can now connect to the internet via an Ethernet cable and have the appropriate LAN adaptor, but I have no wifi adaptor.

Therefore I have now installed the recommended driver for this device, this being

WLAN_Atheros_8.0.0.259_Win7x64, from the official support site here: Acer Support: Downloads & Support Documents - Notebook / Aspire / Aspire 5820T

But as expected the 'Network Controller' is still not being installed.

Do I now go through the whole list of drivers and install them all?

Not an option I really want to do, but if I have to and someone can give me a convincing reason why this will work then I'll give is a go.

Bearing in mind I've already done that once and the problem wasn't resolved then.

I have now installed all the updates from the official site that are relevant to my laptop, still in exactly the same situation, 'Network Controller' isn't being installed.

Even Driver Max site gives me the same version I already have still no joy.

And yes I have checked I haven't turned of my WiFi manually.

More Info.

I have now installed a wireless USB fob, which I know works as it was attached to by desktop PC, and even though its installed and the adaptor is shown I am unable to activate it, this makes me think something else is a miss.

The 'Network Controller' still isn't being installed though.

It is beginning to sound an awful lot like your wireless card in that laptop has failed.
It sounds like you are doing everything correctly, and if you have installed the Wireless LAN driver and it shows up in Device Manager without a yellow ! then it may just not be working.

And no, you do not install any more drivers than you absolutely need to remove and yellow ! in Device Manager and activate all the laptop's devices. Extra, unneeded drivers will cause problems, not solve them.

If you are going to experiment with drivers be sure to create a System Restore Point before the installation, and if it does not work, uninstall the driver and then restore the computer back to that Restore Point before trying another.

badbud, could you do this:

Go to device manager, click on the network controller > go to properties > and then go to details > and choose hardware IDs from the drop down.

You will see a code like: PCI/VEN_8086&DEV_27D8&SUBSYS......

The VEN code means vendor and the DEV code means device: in this case the vendor is 8086 and the device is 27D8.

Once you have the two codes, go to http://www.pcidatabase.com/ Enter the two codes and you should get the name of your hardware.

Does it indicate Atheros, Broadcom, Or Intel?

EDIT: I don't know why, but that link to pcidatabase is not working from SevenForums. But it does work from my bookmarks. Try typing it directly into your browser's address bar. Weird.

Yes its defiantly an Atheros device.

Here are the numbers:

PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_002E&SUBSYS_E034105B&REV_01
PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_002E&SUBSYS_E034105B
PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_002E&CC_028000
PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_002E&CC_0280

So after a little more seraching I get this:

Your Device:
Atheros AR5B97 Wireless Network Adapter

So will now get that driver and see what happens....

You beauty, finally got the right driver and it works, just searched for the above driver and eventually found a newer version.

Acer site has 8.0.0.259
The newer one that works is 9.2.0.316.

I can't thank you enough, I nearly paid out hard earned cash, you should go here and earn a buck or two.

Tech Support, Manuals & Troubleshooting for Consumers, as the answers I got where just useless, fortunately as they haven't fixed it I don't pay for it.

Once again thank you very, very much.
