This has turned out to be a complex problem, so please, any help with this is appreciated.

I have a windows 7 Home Edition 64bit Desktop machine in the basement that I am trying to connect to my wireless network.

The wireless network is up and working fine, been using the current router (cisco linksys) for about a year.

I've tried 3 wireless adapters with the desktop now, 2 of them USB, the 3rd one PCIexpress.
With each adapter I've installed the appropriate driver, and uninstalled it when removed.

I've removed AVG, no other antivirus exists on the computer, windows firewall is disabled.

With any of the 3 adapters, windows will not even search for wireless networks, but continues to read, "No connections are available."

There seems to be no "windows mobility center" in the control panel.

I am sitting right next to the desktop with a laptop, and I have a strong signal so I know the WiFi itself reaches. Best I've been able to narrow it down to is somehow somewhere there is something in windows 7 that is blocking the wireless adapters from working.

Help?

Thanks.

If the installation alone didn't enable it, I would guess it's disabled in BIOS. What desktop do you have?

Thanks for the fast reply!

I checked the bios right after I made the post... unfortunately there was nothing there related.

the desktop is a full ASUStech (ASUS) system..

Now get this, I found the solution:

Deep in the system's long list of services that were disabled/stopped, I found 2 of interest. one "wwan" the other "wlan"
both are for the auto configure networking stuff... (I've had a long day, I'm gonna skip getting too detailed now)

One is for managing wireless broadband connections through cellular adapters, the other for wireless networking.... one was just stopped, the other was completely disabled. I enabled and started both, and wala.

(yes, I checked and did a few restarts to make sure it stays working)

--not responsible for anyone else's headache for not finding this post sooner if they have the same problem.
