Hi,

I'm having an issue between my xp computer/network drive and windows 7.

The drive is on my network and works perfectly with the XP computer, my trouble is with the windows 7 laptop.
It can access the admin of the drive and change settings but cannot view files or map the drive. It also cannot access the XP PC on the network though the XP PC can access the 7 Laptop. Both the XP PC and the storage drive are visible on the 7 network.
The issue with the drive is that it asks for a network username & password which i have not set up. I am running Windows 7 Home Edition and so don't have the 'Local Security Policy' option in administrative tools.

Any ideas that can possibly help? It seems Windows 7 has made things alot more complicated than ever bofore!!

Thanks in advance

Go through this tutorial about sharing with XP, click on the XP tab, it should help.
Sharing files and printers with different versions of Windows - Help & How-to - Microsoft Windows

This one is more general but has good info.
Networking home computers running different versions of Windows

It can also help to get around password problems if you use the same username and password on all machines in the LAN.

After going through all of that if you are still having file access problems try doing this registry adjustment on the Win 7 machine with the problem.

Solution is really easy just modify one key in registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
create or modify 32-bit DWORD: LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy
set the value to: 1

If you are still having the passwork prompts after that read this post from TechNet and make the adjustments described in the first post.

First things first, don't map to an administrative share if you can help it. Create a folder, share it with full permissions for the "everyone" group, then try again. That should work for you.
