Network Failing

HI everyone,

I have been tearing my hair out with my network disconnection issue - OK builds pre 7048 broken after 7057 to 7100. I have a Realtek 8139 NIC. I have tried all sorts of drivers none of them fixed it. Last night I thought I would take a difference approach. The status windows showed the NIC had received 2,590,---,--- packets within the the first ten minutes of turning on the PC before failing, so some service was chewing a massive ammount of data. I used the resorce monitor and found that it was PID 4 - SYSTEM, this seemed a bit strange as nothing was running. It then suddenly occurred that with all my video files sitting on a server on the network maybe it was Mediacentre indexing the files. So i removed the locations from mediacentre libraries and instantly the network settled down and there was hardly any traffic. I put a network link into my local video folder so hopefully it wont index the network drive.

I will run it like this for the next couple of days to see if it fixes it, should everything be OK its a bug Microsoft :D

Thats pretty much my symptoms. I find that it says the network is connected but if you try and even ping another machine it comes back destination unreachable. Have you got any files on the network indexed?

I am currently running 7100 but this problem has been present since 7057. It like the network stack gets full and cannot flush itself until a reboot. I originally thought it might of been a driver issue now I am not so sure. As soon as i removed the library from the network drive the problem seems to of vanished

Something somewhere is getting frakked. I'd point to the Tulip first and your hardware second - but having all those indexed files certainly wasn't helping, it was merely getting you to the even horizon much much faster than you will currently - but wait for a couple of weeks without rebooting and you'll probably have the same issue

Yep i would agree with thatjohngalt all I have done is slow down the inevitable but now it makes the OS usable to me :D. I am not quite sure what Tulip is but if its drivers I have tried the original XP ones from the manufacturer (FOXCONN), the ones supplied by microsoft, the automatic updates one and the latest from Realtek. I really am not worried about indexing on the network drive but it would be good if this issue at some point was addressed by Microsoft, are they even aware of it as it has been a problem for some time now.

In *nix world, tulip is a generic driver that works with most RealTek Network Interface Cards, particularly the 8139 - hence my pet name for those chipset-based cards.

why is the next thought in my head.... ugh, i cant believe they didnt fix this in the interim build and they left it on down the line eventually to be packed up in RC? so, if my thinking would be correct, RC could have started at 48, or at 22 for that matter... and we are still looking at a "beta" "RC"... not even a true RC, if one would want to get techinical on "standards"... but who am i kidding here...

really hate thinking that

Hello. I joined to share info about this problem.

I have a realtek 8168 onboard lan and it was failing as well. What I did and seemed to fix it is change from 100mb half duplex to 1gb full duplex. 100 half duplex and full duplex both made the drivers fail. so far I have had 0 problems with it and its been 24 hours. seems to have fixed it, give it a try and see if it helps.
