I am having a hell of a time trying to figure this one out. My system is as follows (1) desktop with windows 7 which is wired to a Motorola SBG900 modem/wireless router. (1) Laptop with windows 7 which is wirelessly connected to the modem/router. Internet works fine on both, but neither computer sees the other in the network. I have enabled all the advanced sharing settings. I need a little help as I cannot figure out why. It was working perfect under vista. Thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome

Are you using homegroup in win 7? What firewalls are they using? Both off?

If your system is only comprised of windows 7 systems, Why not give Homegroup a try. Ensure you have IPv6 enabled on both machines and type homegroup into the start search :)

If you wish to use the older method follow the basic rules and it should work fine ....

network set to other than public network

All systems on the same IP subnet and in same workgroup
Network discovery and file and printer sharing on on both machines
identical users present on both machines (with passwords)
At least one share present on each machine (created using advanced sharing)

I would use homegroup, but the computers dont recognize each other. I am using the windows 7 firewall on each. Ihave tried disabling that on both to no help. Its baffeling me since the laptop is using the network for internet. Ok, I nave no network access to ipv6 connectivity on both computers.

First, join one machine to a homegroup, copy down the password or change to one that better suits you. Then move to the other machine, and join the existing homegroup. They should detect one another..

Are they part of the same workgroup? Do both machines have the same default gateway (ie: 192.168.0.1) and have the same subnet (ie: 255.255.255.0)?

You need to set them into the same subnet.

Do you use DHCP or are you setting the IP addresses yourself?

OK, it looks like your router may have gotten confused. Here's something to try - shut down (power off) all the systems and the router. Wait at least a minute, then power up the router first, followed by the desktop, then the laptop. Check the IP assignments and see if they have changed.

(There's probably a better way to do this, but it worked for me a while back. What you are trying to do is get everything to reset and start fresh.)

Agreed, but IPv6 should be available. Perhaps power cycling will work on that also.

In any event, he's not going anywhere with networking if the machines are in different subnets (at least not easily)
