Network ID Checkbox Greyed out

I am trying to connect Windows 7 64bit to my SBS 2003 server and I cannot set the domain name in the network ID Box. It is greyed out. I am using the Beta release build 7000.

While debugging, I noticed that the netlogon service is not started, and it will not start when I click on it. Trying to start it generates the following error message in the System Log:

This computer is configured as a member of a workgroup, not as a member of a domain. The Netlogon service does not need to run in this configuration.

I didn't intentionally set it up as a member of a workgroup, how can I disable the workgroup membership so that I can get it to join my office domain?

I also tried to do the http:....Connectcomputer process after creating the client on the server, but I get a message that Client SBS setup does not accept computers with this Microsoft Operating System.

Is there anything that I can do to get this to connect, or is this a problem with my Beta version.

Hello Hydrology, welcome to Windows Seven Forums. Your questions are welcome here.

The Beta of Windows 7 (build 7000) has not been a usable OS for a while now. If you downloaded a copy of the RC (Release Candidate, build 7100) you could install that. Otherwise the Retail Windows Seven will be available for purchase after October 22, or there about.

The 7000 build was time bombed to stop on AUg 1, 2009. I can only think that your system clock must not be adjusted correctly, and that alone would stop you from changing the networking. Robert was of sourse correct. You should at least upgrade to 7100 ( i would go for 7600) both of which are stabile.

You guys are right. I loaded build 7100 and all of the problems went away. The 7100 build seems to run faster also, even though the beta 7000 build still ran faster and more reliably than Vista which I only kept on my machine for 2 days before I got so disgusted I went back to XP. But I think that this one is a keeper. Microsoft finally seemed to get this one right.

Now if we can only get them to fix Office 2007, which I took off my machine even faster then Vista! Anybody want to buy a $400 drink coaster?

7600 ia even better than 7100 and the driver support is really nice. I didnt have to find a single one. win 7 installed all the correct drivers

We had an interesting discussion - for he price of buying 2 retail copies of Windows 7 Ultimate, you can get a TechNet subscription that gives homes users free access to a *lot* of things - ~$280 USD. The downside is that next year you will have to buy it again...and again...and again....

I for one considered it. If I understand correctly, even if I had the subscription and dled a copy of the RTM 7600, I would still need a "product key" to continue using the RTM? I have to buy that don't I?

I know there are other benefits, but as a home user I do not have room or interest to beta test the other software available. So ... I will just continue to wait ... patiently ... until after October 22 to get my paid copy. (sigh)

Not to say it wouldn't be great for others!

I haven't been able to get this working either. Is there a SBS sys-admin who can answer how to get this working?

I run sbs2003 at home and have had no problem with getting XP machines to join but i'm new to Win 7 and have been trying for about an hour to get this to work......
