Network Mapping

Alright,

So i used to have a little home server i used for backups, and after awhile i figured that i would just use my computer and its secondary hdd for backups. So i am trying to get that drive to be able to be seen on my laptop by mapping it out. both use windows 7.

Ideas?

In order to help you more, I've a few questions, and some clarifying I'd like, if you don't mind.

So, you have two machines, and instead of using the home server, you're now going to backup to a secondary drive installed in your laptop?

So i am trying to get that drive to be able to be seen on my laptop by mapping it out. both use windows 7.

Ideas?

Is this a drive from your home server, or the secondary drive mentioned above? If the latter, where exactly is the drive, and what is it connected to?

It is a secondary drive inside my desktop. I am using 3 hard drives. 1: 50 GB SSD 2: 640GB and a 1TB HDD. I am going to use the 1TB for back ups.

And instead of using my old homeserver i will be using this secondary drive in my computer(not laptop). I am just not able to get to the folder i want to see when i am trying to map out the drive on my laptop.

One problem that I see is that if you create an image on that drive, you might not be able to access it when you boot from your recovery disk.
Just a caution.

I would recommend attaching a usb or esata external drive to keep your backups on.
I have seen 1tb external drives for around $100 which would be a lot less aggrivation than trying to restore over a network.

im not going to try and restore over a network. that has nothing to do with my problem. I know what i am doing when it comes to computers, I am just simply trying to figure out why i cannot see this file even when i have it all set to allow.

So i would recommend trying to keep the responses to my question.

I do apologize for being so aggressive about it, but i don't have the patience today.

I shared this DRIVE. And i am trying to MAP the drive from my laptop. This drive is on my desktop. When i try to map the drive it is not showing up.

Please read this again. The words drive/folder make no difference. You need to add the permissions to allow others to access it. Just sharing it isn't enough with Windows 7.

I'll look around for some step-by-step directions. In the mean time: what have you accomplished as far as drive sharing, and where are you bound up? We might be able to help just by knowing what error/etc. you're getting.

IMHO the key to homegroup/workgroup networking with windows 7 is to have users set up with their own passwords on each machine they need to access. Then every shared resource needs to have permissions set to the users who can access those resources.

Even if the network is not visible, it may be possible to map a local drive letter to a share on the local network. Start, Computer, Map Network Drive brings up the following dialog:

Note the checkboxes: Reconnect at logon makes the mapping persistent, and Connect using different credentials allows sharing of other user's resources, if the password is available.
If the share cannot be found, there are further network problems to be resolved.

Alright so i finally got a low end server built and i am using windows server 2003. And when i am trying to connect to it by using this: \\HOMESERVER\Network it keeps asking me for a username and password. I did it before where it didn't ask me for one, but i just can't remember how i did it.

I believe the way to get it to not ask you for a username password would be to punch the username and password in, and then the "remember this" button.

Short of having an Active Directory/Domain environment, I'm not aware of a different way to do have it not prompt you, except maybe giving everyone full control to everything. Which is a terrible idea.(though someone may pipe up with a different solution).

Im the only who access the server so it don't matter if i did that or not. But i have already done that and it still does it
