Network Storage Device Setup and Access problems

I have a Cisco/Linksis E4200 Router. It has both wired and wireless access. I have an external storage device attached that will not allow me to create new folders. The device is a 2TB Hard Drive in a Rosewill enclosure connected to the router by USB 2.0. I had to connect directly to the computer to format the drive initially, but I did not assign a drive letter. The software that came with the router, called Cisco Connect, set up the drive.
When I open the drive, there are files there for a program called Twonky that is apparently for wireless sharing. I am not sure I want to use it because the drive is primarily a backup, and secondarily for sharing. I tried to add a new folder, but it says I do not have permission to do this. I am logged in as an administrator. I changed permissions so that I have full access, but I still cannot add folders.

I am at a total loss here. I am not strong in networking. All I want is a drive that I can access through the router to backup and share files. You know, create folders, copy my music and stuff there, store backups, etc.

Anyone know what I have to do to access this drive?

Hi mac173,

Is your external storage device only a USB capable and no Ethernet port? Did you enable the USB support from your router? Have you tried accessing the external storage using wired and wireless connection? Is this a wireless or wired issue?

When you had it connected directly to a computer were you able to create new folders?

The enclosure has eSATA and USB connections. The Router has USB, so that is how I connected it. USB is enabled, in fact, Storage is an active option in the router configuration, and it is active. External does not have wireless, it is just an enclosure.
I actually did not try to create folders when it was connected to the computer. I don't want to change connections to manage my files and folders.
One other question. If I assign the external drive a drive letter, will it be accesable thru the router to other devices? I thought if it was assigned a letter wireless devices would not be able to access it.

It sounds like you already went into the Sharing Permissions tab of the drive and made the appropriate adjustments there but...have you tried going into the Security tab of the drive and then add "Everyone" to the access list?

Drive Properties>Security tab>Edit button>Add button>Type "Everyone" in the open box>Hit OK >put check marks for full permissions for "Everyone" then hit Apply and Apply again.

You can easily change the permissions to what you like or even remove Everyone again if you want to lock the drive down.
