aem - there is no place to enter a password. When I enter the IP address and the username on the destination machine I get the same error as before.

So you are lauching RDP from w7 (mstsc), and trying to RDP to XP (lets do that if you haven't).

The little Option button on the RDP window (bottom left), press that and what do you u see?

aem - that is correct. I am launching the RDP from the Windows 7 machine and typeing in the IP address and username of the XP Laptop. I have provided both the completed RDP screen and the error in the picture below:



ComputersPlus - Im affraid I don't know... It came installed on the machine so I am asumeing 64bit. If you tell me how to check I will do that for you.

ComputerPlus - I just checked the system information page. It says the Windows 7 laptop is running the 64bit.

What is the computername of the XP?

So in the username box, put in computername\username

aem - He Compter Name of the XP Laptop is "DanLaptop". The Computer name of the Windows 7 Laptop is "Jessica-Laptop". The admin username on the XP Laptop is "Dan York". The Admin username on the Windows 7 Laptop is "Jessica".

I did as you instructed but again came up with the same error. (Please see pic below). I also tried with just the desitination (the XP Laptop) Computer name in the User Name spot, and just the admin username of the destination computerin the User Name spot as well.

We are really at the end of this (or at least i am lol). Maybe double check the comp name and userid of the XP machine. Make sure it's the userid (not necessary usur name). But yeh, it should work with computername(xp)\userid(xp).

I believe you are doing it correctly yes. I don't think you have enabled firewalls, or stopped any services and i assume everything is green. Let see if anyone else can assist.

Windows XP: Get Started Using Remote Desktop

why are you setting up remote desktop, that has nothing to do with the sharing issue.

Ok well if you can ping machines from the other you can connect to each to share files. You just need to create the shares.

Try RDP to each machine.

Start> type in mstsc to bring up the RD session and put in the IP of a machine. Then Enter to connect.

Once you are asked to put in userid/password. Put in the id that you would when you log onto the destination machine.

I did remarked that if he can ping the machine, that's enough to create chares and share files.
