Hey Guys,

I'm using Windows 7 (RTM) and I've got a few questions.

How do I close any open network ports on my computer?
How do I network all the computers so I can remotely shut them down.

Like the server I have thats mapped to my desktop.

How do I close any open network ports on my computer?

The literal answer is "end the processes which are opening them".

However, I suspect the more applicable answer is "use a software or hardware firewall to 'stealth' the open ports and thus provide an additional layer of protection".

How do I network all the computers so I can remotely shut them down.

Like the server I have thats mapped to my desktop.

The in-built "shutdown" command has a switch (/m) that allows it to act upon another machine. To see the syntax help, type SHUTDOWN /? on a CMD prompt.

Everytime I try to shutdown the server it says Access denied. How to I bypass that?

Are all of your administrator accounts using the same password?
Are all the user you are trying shut down from on the remote machine, and have the same password?

Honestly if that's what you want to be able to do that, I would suggest that you run in a domain environment.

!-easiest way is a firewall either win 7 or 3rd party. I use eset smart security bith firewaall and av

2-EEithered wired or wireless. have to be a bit more specific. usual setup is isp>cable modem>router>pc
Router handles traffic for you

3-dont understand, please explain

(I'm assuming this is while using the "shutdown" command-line utility I suggested.)

The remote machine which is receiving the shutdown command will evaluate the credentials of the user account which sent it. In other words, if you log on as username:Bob and passwordass, then issue a "shutdown" command to a different machine, the target examines the request in this manner:

"Does the accounts database which I subscribe to contain a user called 'Bob', and if so does their password match what is being proferred with this command? If all of that checks out, does 'Bob' have the necessary rights to induce a shutdown on this machine?"

In other words, your account has to be known to the target machine, and it has to be an administrator (over there) or at least a user who has been granted the shutdown privilege on that box.
