Networking VMs and File-Sharing

I have win7-pro as host and I usually run two VMs at a time. I can ping all VMs from the host, and ping the host from all VMs. However, I was wondering if I need a Domain Controller, and/or a DNS server on one of these machines to facilitate file-sharing on the network? I'm pretty sure I will need DNS-on-local-net to do 'hostname-to ip address' conversions; however, I don't know anything about DC's.
I could use a little direction on these issues. Thanking all in advance.

Welcome to the forum. You don't need dns as it's handled locally by NetBIOS or you can use IP. Sharing depends what your using to create VM some like virtual box require an add-on in order to share and some other are on a different IP range
