New Build (Advice/help)

Hey there fellers ;D
I need some help finding a new build, my computer at the moment is about 5 years out of date and I need to get prepared for the upcoming games I had picked up Witcher 2 from gog.com for 29 dollars I think it still may be on sale, but I would like to play it on high instead of low. My current specifications are as followed.


-700Watt PSU

-GTX260

-4gb Ram

-Q6600

-P5Q-PRO Motherboard

-Windows 7 32bit

-400gb HDD


Now I am wondering if there is anything worth keeping within my computer if not I will sell most of it off since I would have no purpose for it, right now my budget lies within 1000 dollars, if you guys have any recommendations that would be fantastic and helpful! I would prefer a build that has 64bit instead,

To my mind only the PSU is transferable. With the GTX260 being a option but much better performance can be had for cheap, but it could hold you over till a phase two on the build for budget reasons.

Yes the powersupply is but I have had been having troubles with it previously, as it wouldn't boot I am not sure if one of the 4 pins for the psu is shot, but if it does go ill buy another,

And I have no preferences anymore, either or will suit me whichever is a great deal for the price,

To me you are right at the cusp of a huge new AMD chip that should bring the cost of the 4&6 cores way down. Then if you get the correct AMD mobo for the bulldozer you can ride out the early adopters and then buy in later as an upgrade to the quad or six core now. Are you a mid. tower or a full tower man?

Right now I have been doing my builds in a mid tower, but I am thinking to head towards liquid cooling so I may think it would be inside of a full tower would it not?

So today I decided to pick up a few things I decided to buy the Sapphire HD 6950 along with a 1TB Harddrive.

Swifty nice picks, if that spinner is to be the primary and os drive make sure it isn't a green drive and spins at 7000+ rpm and has at least 32mb cache and best to have 64mb cache.
To me the case is a log term key component which many changes will go in and out of. If it was me doing my build over again I wish I'd saved up and popped for the Corsair 800d but since then many great cases have come out including the wonderful 600 graphite series. For mobo's and CPU's I'm a MSI and AMD man because I'm picking up yesterdays 9-10th's technologies at today's 4-5 10ths prices. I would score and 990 series mobo and a wicked cheap AMD six core with some wicked fast ram and then wait for the Bulldozer to hit and fall in price. Otherwise I would say that a great Intel strategy is available as well.

Bumping this thread because its that time of the year, I am planning on upgrading my computer I have 1200 in cash to spend freely on a new build and ill update what I have in this computer and what I have switched over since the year has passed

-Windows 7 64bit
-HD Radeon 6950 2GB DDR5 (recent purchase)
-4 Gigs of Ram (Looking to upgrade)
-P5Q-Pro motherboard only supports DDR2 Ram( Looking to upgrade)
-Intel Q6600( looking to upgrade)
-OCZ Stealth 650 watt the first post was an estimate
-1TB and 400GB hard drives
-Rosewill Challenger

Now everything I have listed above in brackets stating I want to upgrade, I am just uncertain what kind of equipment I should get for myself, but I have been seeing the 8 cores popping up lately but I would like to hear from you guys.

The new 8-core Zambezi chips are to be honest, disappointing. Performance wise, you would go better with an i5-2500k. However, if you're looking to go with a cheaper option, AMD is probably the way to go. Otherwise, I would stick with Intel and get a Socket 1155 board with an i5-2500k, or just the normal 2500 if you're not overclocking. It'll also leave you open for upgrades to the upcoming Ivy Bridge which I believe uses the same socket as Sandy Bridge.

Yes I am not going to be over clocking I just simply want a better performance in game, I currently play Star Wars the old republic but only get 30fps and I would like to upgrade my ram to something a lot higher and my processor to receive the proper amount of ingame fps

Then I would definitely look at the i5-2500 or if you can spare a little cash, the i7-2600.

When it comes to RAM, you shouldn't need any more than 8GB if you're only gaming. That way, you can also get a higher frequency. I would recommend 1600Mhz or higher if possible, but 1600Mhz should really be sufficient.
