Im just about to do a clean install on my wifes laptop and have got as far as wiping the 320gig hdd using diskpart and am now confused. I want to have the separate 100mb system reserved parition on this machine. So do i install wn7 to the 320gig unallocated space and the installer will create that partition for me, then shrink the win7 partition down when installed or create the partitions using diskpart and install to those formatted partitions.

What im really asking is what set of circumstances does the system reseved partition get created and when does it not.

I think i read if there are already partitions on the disk it wont be created am i right. But do i really want to install on a 320gig partition just to have to shrink it when done.

I have read the tutorials but i think i may have over read so many ive gotten confused.

Thankyou

Hello xxxdannyxxx.

If you want to add the SysResv partition and I do suggest you create/use it on the system, have a look at this snip for the steps to create a 200MB SysResv partition (instead on the current default 100MB) and a single 100GB partition to install windows 7 to; also have a look at this tutorial at the link below for additional info.

SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation

The default SysResv partition is only created when Windows 7 is installed to a Hard Disk Drive that is marked as unallocated space, the same situation achieved when a "clean all" is run, or to a "new" HDD that has never been installed to.

I've done a couple of clean installs to formated and unformatted drives and windows 7 created the 100mb reserved partition on its own every time. Your mileage may vary. ;)

Hi Bare Foot Kid

Think it was your tutorial i was reading so glad your here. I will create it myself then in diskpart. Is it worth making it 200mb.It wont be used as dual boot or anything like that or for the sake of 100mb shall i just make it the 200mb anyway.I presume then i dont need to format the partitions with the installer as diskpart will have done it

Thankyou for your help think i got myself into a pickle.

This is where my confusion come from.On my laptop it created the 100mb partition with other partitions and data on the disk the first time but 6 months down the line when i tried a clean install again i didnt get it.

There seems to be some inconsistancy there

Thankyou Danny

Hello Danny, you're welcome.

To do away with the chance of any inconsistency, just use the commands laid out in the snip and I do suggest to create it at 200MB which was the original default size when MS first introduced the SysResv partition.

Thank you and you are correct, do not use the Windows 7 installer to format anything, they get a full format when you create them with diskpart.
