New computer, sound problems

I installed the usual Realtek, then the driver for the M-Audio soundcard (makers say driver in before card in). When I went to put in the card the PCI slots are there but there isn't enough room for the card itself. Looks like a cut and bodge job. At this point I had a cataract operation, no weights to be lifted, no dust, so the engineering work will have to come later. I now have two drivers, so at Device Driver/sound I selected the Realtek, but although everything plays visually, there's no sound. Normally I use the line out to a quality amplifier and headphone. But even using the front headphone socket, no sound.
I still have to do an elementary check on the physical side; this question is just about the possibility of something in the software set-up - I'm new to Windows 7. Any suggestions or advice much appreciated.

I have a recording studio.

What M-Audio card are you trying to install?

I have an MAudio Fastrack Ultra 8R, but it is a USB connected recording interface.

I have had cataract surgery on both of my eyes.

Go to the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound Panel. The "Speakers" (RealTek) should be set as the default playback device.

Until you get the MAudio card installed, uninstall any software for it and/or disable it in the Device Manager. In the Device Manager Sound section you should have an entry for the RealTek and possibly HDMI audio if you have an HDMI interface on your video. Anything else should be uninstalled.

Fireberd - M-Audio specifically say that the driver goes in first and then the card.
However I tried sound before I put the M-Audio driver in and it didn't work then

Monkies - You're on to something here. However I've tried all sorts and still nothing. Still beavering away.

Thank you both - I'm grateful.

Trying to get you back to just the PC sound device and get the sound working. You can then reinstall the MAudio software, etc. But, you need to get the basic PC sound issue settled first.
