New computer user password bug

I set up my new Dell All in One. I use passwords and so when it asked, I input a password and repeated it. The last character was an Exclamation Point. After pressing Enter, the computer told me that special characters were not allowed. So I used the backspace to erase the last character in both fields, pressed Enter and the password was accepted.

Later, I turned back to the computer after it had gone to sleep. When I input the password, it was invalid. I tried several more times, each time making sure that I typed it correctly. Since it is a password string that I use elsewhere, I was certain I was typing it correctly. I called Dell technical support and just before the tech was going to send me a flash drive with an image of the system, I typed the password WITH the exclamation point. Voila! I was in! The screen had erased the final character from the screen but did not modify the two input strings that it read following the enter.

After you're in your account you should press Ctrl+Alt+Del. Then select change password. This will ask you for your current password (you should try entering it with the ! and without it which ever one works.). Then set a new password.

I removed the password completely for the moment since it's a new computer and I don't have any other apps on it. Thank you.

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

How odd that you saw this. My testing shows that an exclamation mark is a valid password character during a normal setup. I wonder if Dell has done some tweaking to the setup process.
