new cpu cooler, still have to use old cpu fan motherboard plug

hi guys,

i recently got the new Ultra ChillTEC Black edition. this cooler comes with all its sensors and controllers built in, therefore it doesnt have to plug into the cpu fan power plug on the motherboard like my original heatsink.

however, if i don't have the old heatsink plugged into the motherboard, when i try to boot, the computer goes to a black screen and says something about cpu fan has failed, shutting down to protect your system.

so to fix, i have the old heatsink plugged into the motherboard and have just set it down inside the case next to the chilltec.

if possible, i would like to do this the correct way. i feel like ive had to jerry-rig the system to make it work.

i've looked in the bios and havent found anything about hardware monitoring.

i have contacted HP and they don't know there head from their arses after 45 mins on hold. i contacted the manufacturer of my mobo, Pegatron corporation. they emailed me back saying (i copy and paste)

"Dear Sir,
Pegatron is an OEM manufacturer, so we do not sell product with our company name, and we are not allowed to sharing any sepc. or product information. " and she goes on to tell me basically to call HP. i told her HP couldnt help and HP even said my mobo manufacturer was a company called "Athleon." the pegatron rep said she would help to contact hp and see what she finds.

Ideally you want to do one of two things. Go into the BIOS and tell it to ignore the fan speed sensor for the CPU, or find a way to plug the new CPU cooler into the motherboard fan connector so it can read the speed sensor on the fan. I don't recommend doing it but you could plug a case fan into the CPU fan connector, or remove the fan from the old heat sink and leave it plugged in. The problem with that is if the fan on the new heat sink fails you motherboard has no way of knowing it and can't shut down to prevent a CPU overheat condition.

The motherboard is looking for the CPU fan tachometer signal, and when it can't find a signal there, it assumes that your fan has failed.

I finally found some info on it online. It doesn't look like it has a tach output on it, which means that you can't attach the tach wire to the CPU fan header to keep the BIOS happy. About the only thing that you can do here is to turn off the BIOS fan fail warning message, if you can. Some BIOSes have that feature, and some don't.

If you have a buddy that's into electronics, maybe he/she can tap a tach signal off of your fan controller and wire it to the motherboard. It isn't too hard.

well, i double checked the bios and still found nothing helpful. and tho it sounds good, i'd never let any of my friends near the innerds of my computer. they're just not those kind of guys LoL. all the chill tech has is power cables.


i'm considering a new motherboard. partially because of this fan issue, partially because of a future plan to run 2 graphics cards. i'm sure my case right now will only fit micro size mobo's (9.6 x 9.6), so i've found this one so far. was wondering if anyone had better suggestions?
