New Desktop needed -- Domestic desktop or small Server ??

Hi all
Strange request this one -- I need a new Desktop / Workstation -- needs to be a fixed workstation.

I've got plenty of spare disk drives and memory modules and I don't need to buy a monitor.

From what I've seen so far it seems I can get a MUCH better deal on buying a Low end Robust mini tower SERVER such as the LENOVO THINKSERVER S100V (basic model around 300 GBP / 460 USD) rather than a workstation such as say DELL INSPIRON.

The workstation will get ROBUST use and needs to be on for long periods.

A Mini tower Server seems to be the better option -- I can "Up the memory" and increase the disk space and run Windows 7 without a problem on it. Seems Servers at the lower end of the market are actually CHEAPER than Desktops.

(Not talking about "Racks" or "Blades" btw -- these are more specialized nd expensive of course.

I don't need extreme gaming so "Roll your own" isn't applicable here.


Any comments - Disadvantages of running a PHYSICAL server as a workstation (note that a WORKSTATION OS would be installed on it BTW).

Building your own rig doesn't only apply to gaming. But if you're adamant about buying a prebuilt... I don't see why there would be any problem, other than the extras (graphics, sound card) not being exactly up to par.

Servers are often much nosier, and often can consume larger amounts of electricity. Hard drives for servers (if SCSI, or SAS) are often much more expensive.

The memory for the server is going to be more expensive as well, most likely, because it would require ECC.
