New GFX-card

Hello!

I just got my friend new graphic card (Nvidia GTX 280), before I had GTX 260. There's a few things I wonder about:

• My World of Warcraft accelerates more up and down
• My CPU went 2-5C higher
• While I play I can get all the way up to 80C
• It's 50-65C in-Windows

My PSU can handle 750W, and here's a shot from a thread of Sevenforums I found:

Just jumps more down, and then up. That's it basically.
It happens if I maximize my window. The window with the game you know

I'm still not clear whether you mean the fps is spiking, or whether the game itself seems more responsive?

If the game is more responsive, turn down your in-game mouse sensitivity. This shouldn't happen just because you swapped video cards; it usually happens when you switch resolution, but... it might, if in fact, this is the problem.

If the game's fps is jumping around more, then you're going to have to adjust graphics settings. The newer card is going to handle more eye candy... not much going from a 260 to a 280, but definitely some. Have you tried increasing AA or AF?

The fps is just going down each 10th second.

I had heard that there were some WoW problems like this... perhaps if you check the WoW forums they might be better equipped to help?

Or... this could be a sign from God that you need to quit playing WoW and pick up a real game?

The last part says basically to turn UP your settings. WoW is a pretty old game, so your hardware is more than capable of playing it well. The new card may be "bored", to put it in simplistic terms... and so to take advantage of its power, you need to increase textures, increase AF... maybe even increase AA. Try it, see what happens.

If this doesn't work, you can try the mmcss tweak.

I had heard there were issues just like you describe... fps spiking. I'm not sure if there's a fix, but a few WoW players have come in reporting the same issues and they were directed to the WoW forums.

AF = Anisotropic Filtering. It's a texture setting. There's Billinear, Trilinear and finally, Anisotropic. AF doesn't give you a big fps hit, so you can max that at 16x.

AA = Anti Aliasing. It's a graphics setting. It smooths edges, but it gives you an fps hit. Try 2x... 4x max.

Both of these settings can be found in the game (if it supports it?), and in your nVidia Control Panel. It's best to let the game manage AA, so in your driver settings use application controlled, then below that, select Multisampling... NOT supersampling as that's a much bigger fps hit.

DON'T select to override or enhance just yet... get a baseline down first.

First off, unless you're running dual monitors, you should set the drivers to single display, not dual, which they're at by default.

The AA and AF settings are above what your screenshot shows... so scroll up to the top. I'd post a pic, but right now I'm on my i5-750, which has a 5850, so... you'll have to do this Jedi style and use the force, or wait till I get back from the dog park... I'll toss up a screenshot then... if you haven't already solved it. Since it's pretty straightforward, I have no doubt you will.

+ I forgot to mention, I only have the driver itself install. Not PhysX, 3D controller etc.

It's normal for FPS to drop/increase in WoW...depends on the area your in etc...go into your Video settings in game (Options) and set it to max everything. Wow doesn't use physx so thats no loss and it doesnt use 3D and except for water effects its not using DX11 either. Graphics are dated and one of my pet peeves about this game..it will be the same BS in another 2 xpacs..cheers

You've got your settings to enable 8xAA globally, overriding applications. Further, in the screen you're unable to select an AA mode, so it could be csaa, super-sampling or multi-sampling?

That's fine if you like it that way, but you should then probably use the programs tab to set up your games based on individual performance... some games you may not be able to run 8xAA. That's asking a lot, even for a 280.

Except for the AA mode, multi-sample, I let the game determine the settings.

btw, it doesn't appear as if you're running the latest drivers. I don't see where you can enable Ambient Occlusions.

The first thing we need to do is agree that from now on you'll only post screenshots of your machine. Screenshots from Google can't help us. What I said was based on the screenshot you last posted. I thought it was your machine; thus, your current settings. Since that's not your machine, what I said may or may not apply... won't know until we see your settings.

Multisample is an anti aliasing mode. It's just one of a few different ways of implementing anti aliasing. It's also the fastest mode... but we're not there yet... Let's see the rig.

Actually, the game went a lot better today! But still drops a little not much. Just to 58 fps. What I did was, to restore the Nvidia Control Panel settings, if it changed something, I don't think so. Maybe it's because of the fresh-driver yesterday. Could been stressing it and heating it during the game. Anyways, still a little fps bug, had it on my old GFX card to. I don't know why. Anything to be changed here?
