I have a HP Pavilion Elite HPE-570t. I am using an SSD for my o/s and a 1.5TB drive for data. I tried to install a 4tb drive to replace the 1.5TB drive. When I hooked up the 4TB via SATA, the computer could see the drive. But when I try to format the drive, I get the blue screen problem. Windows will not boot up with the drive connected. I have to wipe the new drive in order to boot up windows (or disconnect drive). I am able to use the drive if I convert it to USB connection, but I really would rather have it in my desktop. If I do not disconnect the drive, the computer gets hung up on the Windows load screen.

I initialized the drive as GPT. I don't know what that does, but I was told to do it that way. I also tried cloning the drive but get the same result.

I also tried formatting the drive on another computer, but after I install it in my desktop, I get the same problem getting stuck when loading Windows.

When the drive is not formatted at all, it does read the entire drive size. Is it just not compatible with this size drive?

I'd drill into the HP web site for info on what size drive that model is supposed to support.

Does this PC use BIOS or UEFI?

I've never used a drive that large, but my general understanding is that current generation motherboards without UEFI support 4 TB GPT partitions IF they are storage only--not boot partitions. But I know nothing about that particular HP model.

It uses BIOS. I forgot to mention that I updated the BIOS after the drive not working in hopes that would solve the problem, but no change there.

I'd pound the HP web site.

If the 4 TB drive is connected, can you use a Windows install disc to get to the diskpart command?

I used the diskpart command in the command prompt in windows. i can do everything up to formatting the disk (connected via sata), then it bombs on me
