ok so my C is failing. luckily i have a D drive. which is running now.

i have a brand new internal HDD coming tomorrow along with a HDD USB dock.

now what i was going to do is remove both C and D drives, put the new one in and install 7 on there and have it as my main drive.

is it possible to just install ad OS onto a drive like that? or should i leave D in and replace C and install it via D and follow up by reformatting my D drive?

Most new HD's come with cloning software bundled in or available at maker's Support Downloads webpage for the model.

Since you were going to do a clean install anyway, you can try cloning first to see how it performs. I would do the clean install with all other HD's unplugged.

Another option is to backup a drive image externally using WIndows backup imaging, then reimage to the new HD. You might need to repair the MBR if it won't start up, using the Win7 DVD REpair console or Repair CD to run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times with reboots. Make sure Win7 is marked Active.
