Hi

I just bought a second hand hard drive for my laptop (HP Nx6325) which has windows 7 ultimate 32 bit already installed. When I put in my new hdd it starts loading up win 7 and after a few seconds flashes bsod (cant read it as its too fast) and reboots. Then it tries to repair win 7 and after a long time of looking like its doing something says nothings wrong (but tries and fails to boot again)

Any help on why its doing this and how to load win 7 properly. I dont have the cd so cant do a repair but have a legally downloaded installer of win 7 professional that I could use if I burnt the iso to cd.

Is there some way I can repair win 7 ultimate that is on the new hdd or do I have to go the long way and format the drive?

Ta ;)

go to an administrator account. In search type cmd Once in cmd type sfc /scannow.This will locate problems. Then Get us your dump files.

Burn the iso. With the CD boot the computer and then select repair install. You must have a legal key, however.

Hi

Reinstall with your Legal licence key only. Repairing would not be legal.

I missed that. We do not give advice for anything illegal.

You don't need to install XP to do the upgrade...search the forums here and you'll find assistance on doing a clean install with the upgrade disc.

You say you have a "legally downloaded installer of WIn7 Pro", but do you have a key? The key is the legal part. All of the installers are the same after unhiding versions.

If you have Pro key, then it will not work in the Ultimate HD you want to recover anyway. And there isn't any reason to recover it unless you have an Ultimate key.

I got my win 7 pro version from microsofts msdn:aa programme so I have the installer and legal license key on my external hdd.

What I wanted to know was whether I could repair ultimate on my new hdd using the pro installer. Too late anyway as I've already reformatted and installed xp, now it wants sp2 before I can run the win 7 installer.

Thanks for your help everyone

As was mentioned much earlier, You do not need to have XP on the machine to use Upgrade version: http://community.winsupersite.com/b...-windows-7-with-upgrade-media-the-answer.aspx

This workaround is approved by MS. You only need to have the XP/Vista on hand and not use it again after Upgrade.

You get the cleanest install anyway by booting from the installer to use Custom>Drive OPtions to format the HD first.

Is your installer bootable? You will need a bootable installer for the Repair console.

As I also mentioned earlier all of the installers are the same (with versions hidden) including the repair console.
