I ordered a new heatsink and fan that I've received already , checking the new Heatsink and Fan, I've noticed there are two layers of sticky material ( I assume that it's the thermal paste). The first one is a bit bigger material that is on the heatsink part where it's going over the CPU, the other sticky material that is on the part going to cover the Graphic chip I guess..
so what about the two sticky material that I've seen in the heat sink, are they the thermal paste that the seller has told me about ....

should I wipe the thermal paste in the heat sink and put the Arctic silver one instead after cleaning the CPU and chip by using ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL , and do I need to tint my heat sink....
....

I would use the Artic. as far as tinting I don't know.

the problem is that I've just contacted the seller and he told me that he is highly not recommending wiping the thermal paste on the new heatsink and whatever i do it'll be under my responsibilities , even he told me the Arctic silver is creating problem and CPU stops working on many occasions he's seen
he' just advised me to clean the CPU and graphic Chip using the highly concentrated alcoholic liquid , and then put the heat sink without touching the thermal paste already applied on the heatsink
I got confused and i do not like to do something that might void the warranty of the newly heatsink and fan , and in the other hand I want to do a good job that will increase the efficiency of my Laptop , and reduce the overheating and I do not really want to re-open my Laptop to apply new thermal paste as assembling the laptop is not easy at all ....

theoretically you should clean the chips and apply the heatsink without removing what is already applied to it.

If you want to go and adventure (and likely to void the warranty) remove them and apply a better thermal paste, make sure that it is NOT CONDUCTIVE and NOT CAPACITIVE (must be clearly stated somewhere, anything else goes in the trash). So that any spill won't short-circuit or otherwise interfere if it goes on the board or wherever. So you can just put a small blob and forget about it looking messy.

In any case, don't mix the pre-applied with the new one.

Was discarded by previous owner due to "horrible performance".
Was running Win Xp from a IDE drive. Yeah. Was a pain.
SATA II drive and Win7 and it zips away! Yay!
What you are saying is the new heatsink has pre-applied thermal paste? I'd leave that on there. I would, however, take 90%+ Isopropyl Alcohol and a coffee filter and clean the CPU really good before installing the new part.

As mentioned, you're choice op. but as KB said, at least clean the CPU.

Since its a laptop cooler, just stick with the pre applied paste.

Good to hear! Over the next day or so you might see it drop a few more degrees as the paste "settles" in.

Thanks, for the reply
you mean as times is going the temperature will start decreasing, and what i have noticed is that the temperature was 52 and starts going down to 42 , do you expect i can notice more decrease in the temperature.. or the temperature will stay around 40 C as normal.

It's normal for the temperature to spike at boot up, then drop a little. What kbrady1979 was referring to is the TIM (Thermal Interface Material aka paste) will continue to spread a bit due to the heat of the CPU making it less viscous and allowing the film to become thinner, improving heat transfer (other factors may also be at work, depending on the kind of TIM, but will still give the same results). In other words, instead of initially getting 52°C dropping to 42°C you have now, you may eventually see something like 50°C dropping to 40°C.

Thanks for the reply, I know the kind of the thermal paste plays a role in making good heat transfer, I bought Arctic silver and was intending to use it, but the seller was the one who convinced me not to use it and continue using the already applied thermal paste in the HSF(Heat sink and fan)..
as he was telling me if something happens i will not be responsible and that is why i did not take risk..
I read about the Arctic silver 5 , and I thought I could use it instead the one the manufacturing putting it..

What you are saying is the new heatsink has pre-applied thermal paste? I'd leave that on there. I would, however, take 90%+ Isopropyl Alcohol and a coffee filter and clean the CPU really good before installing the new part.

I took your advice and i used the pre-applied thermal paste, the results seems good and in my oinion it would not be that much difference if i use Arctic silver 5...
Thanks for the reply and advice

Just FYI for folks, here's the Thermal Compound to get:

ARCTIC MX4 Thermal Paste - 4gram - Newegg.com

4 grams, many uses with that much, a little goes a long way with this stuff, so you don't go crazy with it, even though you could. :D

Just FYI for folks, here's the Thermal Compound to get:

ARCTIC MX4 Thermal Paste - 4gram - Newegg.com

4 grams, many uses with that much, a little goes a long way with this stuff, so you don't go crazy with it, even though you could. :D

Me and my buddy were using MX-2 until this stuff came out, and we got a tube of it for my PC build and it is really good stuff. It's what I use and what I recommend.

It's what I used on my build. It is easy to use, doesn't need a burn-in period to get the TIM to spread properly, and it's non-conductive so if you do manage to get too much on, it won't short out anything. I suggest doing one or more test applications to make sure you are putting the right amount on (I got a bit too much on the first time).
