My wifes machine has been running increasingly slowly, and I thought that I would reinstall the OS, and take the opportunity to upgrade to Windows 7 from XP. I carried out the analysis and the results suggested that it would be OK to upgrade.

I have done the upgrade, and in a system that has the bare OS and nothing more, it is running agonisingly slowly - can anyone suggest what I should do to find out why? It could be that the system is not powerful enough to operate - it has the following:

143GB storage (97GB free after the install)
Intel Celeron 2.93 Ghz chip
2 GB RAM

Any thoughts from anyone?

I think if you upgrade the ram to 4GB and a little faster (if you can) should do the trick. 2 GB isnt really adequate for running Windows 7 in my opinion. I had an older computer and I went from XP to WIN7 and it was sluggish. Upgraded to 4GB and it seemed to fix my situation.

I used the windows unload system from xp to copy my data. I then clean loaded windows 7 and reloaded my data back on using the reload facility. I have not loaded Office or any other application except for Avast! as anti-virus.

For a test, disable all your startup programs (in msconfig > startup tab) and see what happens. How many startup programs do you have. The only one required is your AV program, but depending what that is, it can be a pain by itself. I am not familiar with Avast, so I don't really know how much it could slow the system.

You should, of course, understand that you are running on a vintage system with little RAM and a slow CPU (and probably also a slow disk). That in itself will not promote things.

With a SSD you could really boost performance. But that is a matter of finances.
