New install Windows 7 - "Checking for Updates" doesn't finish

Hello again, friends.

Ok so here's my new issue. I got a new hard drive and successfully installed Windows 7 on it. I temporarily slaved the old OS hard drive so that I could copy some files from it because the drive was failing.

My issue is that when I check for updates, it doesn't go beyond the "checking" and it basically times out. Seems odd... has anyone else had this happen and what do I do? You don't think that maybe the computer is confused because the OS still remains on the drive that is temporarily slaved do you? One odd thing is that I checked the update history and clearly some went on there. So I don't know. Help?

You guys rock. Thanks for helping me out with the last issue.

I also forgot to mention that at present, it wouldn't allow me to put a screensaver on there and there is no sound coming from the computer. Do you think this could just come with the update problem?

Delays are quite common when using Windows Update. There are a bunch of threads regarding that problem and how to fix it, but I haven't really kept up on the topic since I don't have the problem.

Did you let it try for say at least an hour or two?

Are you saying you STILL have both drives connected? Even if true, that isn't likely to be a problem.

Did you have more than 1 drive connected when you did the new install?

Have you successfully activated the new install?

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
It's a lot easier to clean install these days with the unofficial sp2
There are essentially 3 updates needed for a clean install of windows that will get you updated through April of 2016

KB3020369 & KB3125574 & KB3172605 all can be downloaded from the M$ catalog using internet explorer
Microsoft Update Catalog

Simplifying updates for Windows 7 and 8.1 – Windows for IT Pros
When manually installing updates you need to switch your update settings to Never check for updates and restart the machine first.

After restart you will need to ensure the built in windows update service is stopped and set to manual first too or it will conflict with the stand alone installer.

Afterwards reset the windows updates service to what it was before and update settings to your preference and check for updates
Should be only 50 or so updates left to install.

I also have all three updates needed on my OneDrive if you don't want to or can't use the catalog for them
Microsoft services

If you need new installation media just post the exact version and 32 or 64 bit and language and we can get you a download link
Or do it yourself with this
Microsoft Windows and Office ISO Download Tool

Yeah I let it try for that long easily.
I just had the new drive connected when I did the install, FYI.
Everything else is good on the install. I was able to install Office and such.

Go ahead with ThrashZone's suggestions about how to get those 3 specific updates. He's kept up with this issue more than I have.

HI. I Started one of the downloads and it said it wasn't applicable to my computer. I tried it again and it's taking forever "searching for updates on my computer." Not sure what's going on. I'm downloading them from Microsoft's site.

Hi,
They do need to be installed in this order KB3020369 & KB3172605 & KB3125574
If the stalled one is the last KB3125574 it is the largest so be patient it is the unofficial sp2.
If it was either of the other 2
You may have not verified the windows update service was not Stopped and also did not switch to Manual.

Hey guys... thanks very kindly for all the help. All is well and I'm very appreciative for the advice. Now if I can figure why my damn screen saver isn't coming up. LOL. Thanks.

Hi,
Are you referring to a default aero theme screen saver or did you add a third party theme ?
I usually use my own images to a aero theme and just point the screen saver to a folder with the files I want to use for it.

Hi,
What exactly happens ?
What is the timing you set it to activate ?
Which are you using Bubbles.... ?

I'd use Photos and point it to a folder with images in it set the timing and be done.
