My Hp Pavilion Notebook has started randomly turning off today. It happened 2 times today and once yesterday. It basically just shuts off as it would if i held the power button down, and then restarts on it's own. It brings up a black screen saying that the system wasn't responding and shows options to start in safe mode or whatever (i'm sure you know the one i mean). My laptop is just over a month old so i don't understand why this is happening. I don't think it's an overheating problem because i have a cooling pad which i always use. My laptops been running around 40C all day, which isn't any different from any other day. Any insights on what the problem could be?

Send it back for a refund. That sounds like a hardware failure, and HP doesn't have a very good record of fixing hardware problems permanently.

I'm not going to resort to that just now. It's not doing it often enough for it to bug me. I was just wanting to see if i could counter the problem before it got worse.

A laptop should not be shutting off like that at random, ever. What you're describing is an internal power failure. It's not something that can not be countered with a software fix. Taking it apart or trying to fix it yourself will void the warranty.

Hardware problems get worse over time, not better. I'd go with MadTownIdiot's advice

That wouldn't sort the problem though, that would just stop it restarting afterwards wouldn't it?

How do i get to system properties?

Edit: It just shut down again but i think this was for a different reason. It brought up a blue screen with a lot of writing asking if this was the first time it's happened or something but it shut off before i could properly read it. Then when it started up it offered to check for a solution to the problem. What could that be?

If your using ATI Graphics it would be smart to install the ATI Expertool it has a EventViewer that describes the critical errors nicely filter by critical and you can see exactly whats going on there...:p

I agree 100%. I recently had the same problem with 2 HP laptops. Take it back and maybe exchange for a different brand. HP has a very bad track record for shutting down.

You could get a Dell studio 14 with a core i3, an ATI HD5450, & 3GB DDR3 for about the same price.
Another option is a Toshiba Satellite M640-BT2N23 with an nVidia GeForce 310m... although I'm not so sure about that one
Acer makes some good laptops.. and their prices aren't too bad.. check out the Aspire Timelinex 3820TG
