New Jersey principal wants parents to ban social networking.

A principal at Benjamin Franklin Middle School in New Jersey is asking parents to join a voluntary ban on social networks and text messaging according to WCBS News.
The principal sent out an email to parents in the district to get their kids off of social networks and watch their texting closely.

"Please do the following: sit down with your child (and they are just children still) and tell them that they are not allowed to be a member of any social networking site. Today!

"Let them know that you will at some point every week be checking their text messages online! You have the ability to do this through your cell phone provider.

Pragmatic, yet ironic

The idea does have merit though.

The principal also sounds old enough to remember a time when people managed to exist quite easily without the internet.

As a parent myself, you have a responsibility to keep your children safe and watch what they do and provide guidance along the way.

With regards to social networking sites...i think there is a legitimate concern with limiting or eliminating that outlet. Mostly because kids, teens and even lots of adults don't understand the security ramifications of some of the things they post.

With regards to texting...i'm torn on that one. That would be like listening to a phone call or snatching a letter between a boyfriend and girlfriend. I think it's more important that you understand where your kids are, who they are with and develop a good relationship and teach them right and wrong and responsibility for their actions.

I would agree with you here. I think that kids need to understand that things they post on the internet are no longer theirs, and everyone can see them. Don't post underage drinking/smoking/sex/etc online, not only can your parents see them, cops can, employers can, schools can...

Kids do not seem to understand that things on the internet are not private, and there are things they should not say either.
Posting every little detail of their lives, signing up for every group and thing just allows advertising to be narrowed into them.

Texting is like phone calls, and unless the parent has reasonable suspicion that the child is doing something they do not approve of (or illegal), then there is absolutely no reason that the parent can read their texts.
