Had old laptop, with user Fred having home folder in C:\Users\Fred.HisDomain.
In new laptop, user Fred has home folder of C:\Users\Fred
New laptop does have C:\Users\Fred.HisDomain with all the stuff from the old laptop

What do I have to change to get Fred on the new laptop have C:\Users\Fred.HisDomain as the home folder?

(It's simple in Linux but extremely opaque to me on Windows :( )

Sorry if this has been addressed before. I read thru the tutorial and I got lost.

Welcome to the forum.
Normally, when you create a user and call it Fred it creates a C:\Users\Fred.
So, the C:\Users\Fred.HisDomain is the one out of the rule. It may have been created in other way than by Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\User Accounts.
How did new laptop does have C:\Users\Fred.HisDomain? Did you copy the entire folder from old computer?

Yes, I copied all of C:\Users from old to new. Sorry to leave that part out. The old one's main account pointed to Fred.Domain. When I set up the new one, the new main account, Fred, got created with the default, so it was just plain C:\User\Fred. Because some work stuff already knows about Fred.Domain, I was hoping to just point to it.

You want to use all configuration and data you have on the old computer on the new one?

All this kind of operations has a risk of going wrong. Accept as a risk. Do a Backup.

- Go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\User Accounts and Create a new user called Prov with admin rights.
- Reboot and log in as Prov.
- Go to C:\Users\Fred and rename the folder to C:\Users\FredNew
- Go to C:\Users\Fred.HisDomain and rename the folder to C:\Users\Fred
- Reboot and log in as Fred

- If everything works as you wish to, go to to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\User Accounts and delete the account Prov.

I gave up trying to have c:\Users\Fred.HisDomain as the home folder for Fred. So Fred now lives in C:\Users\Fred & I copied over most of c:\Users\Fred.HisDomain to c:\Users\Fred and then manually changed any reference to Fred.HisDomain to Fred in all files. A true waste of time. But thanks anyway.
