Good Day to all. Just bought a new Dell laptop with Win 7. Went through the initial windows data entry, but fat fingered the user name and now cant remember exactly what got typed into that line..

Can only get to blue login screen with box in the middle of screen, one line for user name and one line for password with arrow to the right of it.

I'm really not sure what I typed in there to start with. I know, I know, what a goof.

Could I possibly use a recovery disk from a similarly built laptop to start things all over again? I have another dell from 2 months ago, inspiron as well, just different model with Win 7 as well.

Thanks and good luck with my question.

Steve

You should have the built in recovery partion that will reset your machine to factory defaults.

How is that accessed, in the boot menu or startup repair?

It should show which F-Key it is on durring the BIOS post. If dell uses the same approach HP does it will be built into the recovery console. which is normally f10 or f12.

Well I was able to get past the startup issue with going to safe mode, changing access for the administrator and opening the guest account.

But now it only starts up in the guest account without the option of going thru the administrator access at all.
Should I go back to safe mode and change everything on the access level?

There is a way to make a new user account via the recovery console, but at that point it gets rather in depth, and would be easier to just perform a system restore.
