New motherboard

Hey there guys, I am back here again with something with a minor problem... A work colleague of mine has blown his motherboard (no idea how) but he is looking for a replacement without having to upgrade... Trying to keep the price down. Here is what he has now
ABIT Computer AB9 Pro, LGA 775/Socket

He is looking for the exact same one or one very similar. He has asked for a motherboard to be compatible with his Pent D CPU, DDR2 Ram and SATA 2.


What I am asking is... What is out there that is cheap but covers 99% of the components?



Any help would be much appreciated.

Why cover 99% of his components? I can't help you with that. I can help you however to make the new motherboard bootable.

What OS does your friend have?

I wonder whether it is one that would be transferable to the new motherboard. If not, that could raise the expense significantly.

Actually fellas the cost in NZ are just horrendous I thought we were bad here but them poor blokes.

I don't know what to suggest and I think the chances of getting that mobo is pretty slim especially with that RAM.

So what exactly happened I know you say you don't know how but was something spilt on it? are you sure it isn't the PSU? If that lets go then mate it is an easy fix - test it out first before you start pulling it apart.

Heading over to his place to see if I can diagnose what the problem is. He claims to have broken a ram slot or something, I dont think that it is cause of the problem.

Yep hope it turns out ok mate sounds perhaps the stick is more likely to be broken than the slot that would take a fair bit of force to do.

Just look around for scorch marks and blown caps while you at it.

Oh and check out that PSU mate have a sniff and look any hot wiring or caps again maybe it is just that. If it is then I don't know what the prices are like over there but I have a few spare sitting here he could have for free.

Do you have a shop that sell and repairs computers close by you can get needed parts. Maybe used. Some old hardware cost more than modern hardware.

Well speaking from experience when I was helping a Kiwi a while ago they do but they charge like a wounded bull Bear even for used stuff. It was cheaper for me to ship the PSU this fellow needed then it was to buy a used one he had picked out there and it wasn't a real good PSU he was offered either.
Frankly having and running a machine in NZ is a very expensive hobby for some.

But again both used I reckon this is really going to be hard to track one down the only suggestion is to find out how much our fellow is able to come up with and just do a build or get a prebuilt

Apart from a garage sale if you can scrape the cash together you can build a new basic system for ~$600 especially if you have the odds & sods like monitor, keyboard HDDs etc.
The base Asrock Z77M motherboard is cheap with a base i3 and 8GB memory kit you have a nice system. You could use your existing case and PSU but you could still get new decent components. Antec is good value even if you go for a combined case/PSU. Windows 7 OEM home premium will set you back ~$100 but you will need that for a new motherboard anyway to do things legally.

Best idea I eckon mate as as sure as eggs are eggs something else will letgo.

There is this it is very basic and I don't know what the shipping would be but I know when I researched for that other Kiwi the dealers over there are something else:sarc:

I had one from PCCG before I built and I revamped the thing for my brother so I know they are not bad machines. Just wonder what the shipping would be though.

Thats a shame cos I know the prices over there are just rip off stuff. What dealers do you have over there as it could be possible to ship form here if you let me know I can check out a few for you but don't leave it long as i am off tripping in ten days.

Pity you were not a bit closer I would have sold you my quad core tester with an SSD and OS already on it for the cost of the bits I put in but it is a fairly heavy machine and would cost a fortune to ship I reckon .
