Hi all, previously Fieseler from the Vista forums...

Will be installing windows 7 with my new build at the end of this month. Previously a user of Vista since early 2008.

Are there any major differences in how windows 7 works from vista (apart from the new taskbar)

hi Fj, and welcome to sevenforums,

if you've been a vista user, you'll feel instantly at home with 7.

you've already identified the major UI change, namely the taskbar where you can pin icons. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/397-taskbar-pin-unpin-program.html

then there are jumplists: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3227-jump-lists.html - once you've got your head around them, they can be a major aid to productivity, allowing you to quickly open folders of your choice in explorer, or favourite files in any app.

there's hardly any learning curve to negotiate - unlike windows 8 - but don't get me started on that. :zip:

oh, and there's aero snap too. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/487-snap-window-side.html

none of these features are forced upon you, but are very handy once you've learned them.

of course there are other changes too, like homegroups: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/43961-homegroup-create.html, and more, but most of them make sense and are simple to learn.

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Have a look here: Compare Windows - Microsoft Windows

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with Windows 7, in my opinion it is far superior to Vista.

If you want to use legacy applications I recommend you buy Windows 7 Professional at least, which gives you the ability to use XP Mode under Virtual PC.

Just enjoy your new operating system and do check out the tutorials for a wealth of information.

Also, learn the keyboard shortcuts. They make Windows 7 such a powerful operating system. For example, the windows key + tab will bring up the aero flip window switcher.

Wowzer had my system up & running for over a week now, performance over vista is much improved. Just under 1 minute for boot time (From the press of the on switch to a logged on desktop) would be faster without password lol. Love the new taskbar system & uac is much less intrusive. Everything feels a lot snappier when opening stuff like control panel.

The jump lists are very useful, as is snapping windows side by side :)

Build's not quite finished, gonna grab an SSD & a WD Black to run Smart Response, also the onboard sound is still shocking compared to a 5 year old X-fi! So waiting on a sound card at the moment.
