If you're looking solely at transfer rates, the USB 3.0 specification – with its 5Gbps speeds – may be plenty fast, but it already can't push the same amount of raw data as, say, Thunderbolt. New specifications coming down the pipeline, like SATA Express and external PCIe, are promising speeds that flat-out blow USB 3.0 out of the water. The USB Promoter Group's aiming to stay in the race with an innovative tactic; rather than compete solely with transfer rates, they're also turning the familiar USB connection into the equivalent of a 100W power cord.

A 100w USB connection seems a bit excessive.

Why would you plug your laptop into your desktop to charge the battery, when there is a power outlet nearby?

I'd rather have a low watt power feed on a faster connection, like Thunderbolt, SATA Express or external PCIe.

Just my opinion.

I agree +, before you know it, people will have problems with overloading their PSU too....
The article says external HDD's might need this... I'm probably not getting it but an external hdd on a desktop, you'd probably choose separate power. For a Laptop... the extra 100W would be asking a lot or too much of it's power feed...

Oh no .. the PSU's of the average PC! Most of them have low quality units equipped .. this 100w capable USB is just asking for trouble if people start plugging stuff in and their power supply isn't upto it!
