Hi again,

Fixed the old problem of the computer rebooting.. I just gave up and awaited a new CPU through the post.

Fitted the new CPU, now when I boot it up I'm not getting any POST beeps or display through monitor.

I've read topics around tinternet and everybody says it's mobo or CPU.

The mobo is less than a month old, and the CPU came two days ago.. I'm pretty confident that it is neither of them (if it turns out to be.. I won't be surprised though)

I've ran a basic boot with only mobo, CPU and HDD's attached.. same problem

Checked the pins on the processor and in the CPU slot, all seem pretty good. All wires that are supposed to be connected are connected so can't see a problem there.

I also disassembled and rebuilt the PC while it was completely unplugged on the floor, so don't think I shorted anything...

Please somebody help :banghead:

Have you tried running with only one RAM module inserted? What about with the HDDs removed? Do you have a CD/DVD drive connected as well? See if running with bare minimum allows you to at least see the screen and access the BIOS. Bare minimum would be CPU, PSU, and one RAM module. Try each RAM module, as well.

There is one other piece of hardware you did not mention that can cause this behavior: a bad PSU.

I've tried running basic with no drives also, and just tried with one RAM stick.
I don't have any spare PSU's that are compatible with my mobo so it's looking like a money job.

Would appreciate any other information or help

Thanks

I think you are stuck with a money job if you have done what you say and have no spare parts to swap in as a test and have no tools to independently test the PSU or motherboard.

I assume you have tried all available ports where applicable and swapped out cables when possible?

The bare minimum is:

Motherboard
PSU
Single RAM stick in various slots

Outside the case, with nothing in the slots.

I've been giving this some thought and realized you never told us what CPU you had and what CPU you replaced it with. Are they the same? If not, it could be that your BIOS version does not support the new CPU. Is your BIOS up to date?

I have ran it with bare minimums outside the case and no joy.

The old processor was an Intel P4 3.0Ghz and I've replaced it with an Intel Core 2 Quad 2.5Ghz

The mobo says it is compatible with all Core 2 processors including mine, and the mobo is also new.. I think the bios is 2009 or 2011.

Also, if I'm honest I've got no clue how I would be able to update the BIOS as I currently can't get a POST screen.
When I put the old CPU back in I experience the same problem..

I asked about the new CPU because sometimes a motherboard says it supports newer CPUs, but if you read the fine print, it also says it only supports the CPU after a certain BIOS version. The fact that you have the same problem with the old CPU indicates this is probably not due to the CPU upgrade but a different hardware fault... Given the troubles you have had prior to this, I would suspect the PSU or motherboard.

I recently built a system for my girlfriend and had to finally RMA the mobo for the exact same issue. The mobo tested fine but the Northbridge heat sink springs were loose and the mobo wouldn't post for the heat warning. Please look closely at the NB and SB heat sinks and tighten them just snug and re-test.

Beep codes are CPU generated, if you don't get any at all and presuming there is a speaker connected, then the fault is the CPU. It could be seated wrongly, it could be that your PSU isn't up to it. Might just be the CPU and \or Mobo are US.

As far as I know it has an internal speaker, as I've always heard a beep whether there is a monitor connected or not.. I can't tell whether it's booting, despite the HDD's running and everything sounding like it's making a move.. no signal through VGA or HDMI and no beep :( There is a 4 pin connector for a speaker, but I've never had one plugged in

Heatsink seems fine, recently purchased an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro and it fits nice and snug.

I'm starting to lean towards it being the PSU, as it's the only component left that is isn't pretty much brand new. If I buy a new PSU and that doesn't fix the problem I'll be taking the mobo back to the store and have them test the system out.

By going at the symptoms you stated, it does look like a failing PSU.

MrRevolutionary,
The CPU heat sink and cooler isn't going to be the issue as your not posting to it yet. But do please see if you can wiggle the Northbridge or Southbridge heat sinks. The NB heat sink if loose will not let the system post to the CPU till it's in good contact. Likely you checked this but just want to make sure you weren't thinking I was discussing your CPU cooler.
