New PSU = GPU overclocks better for some reason more stable?

Had a crappy 240W PSU before and was struggling with some issues. random shut downs as if the plug was pulled on my pc. and graphics card struggled when overclocked much at all it'd make my display go black and come back with the program crashed and my display driver notification saying it stopped responding and recovered.
I could only get it to +100mhz core clock and +825mhz memory overclock.
Its a Zotac GTX 1050 TI OC dual fan low profile graphics card 75W no power connectors required

With my new 430W power supply it works much better and im able to get it stable at +180mhz core clock +100mv voltage and +825mhz memory clock and its perfectly stable no crashes ever
and my computer doesnt randomly shut down anymore either.

I think my new power supply has better regulation and so the voltage is kept higher with less voltage drop so theres less current drawn and it just runs so much better now

the new psu didnt fit in my case but thats ok the cables are plenty long enough to reach into my computer I just have it sitting on my desk right behind my computer and the wires just fed through the gap where the old PSU used to be.
I'm surprised theres such a big difference for the graphics cards overclocking ability with the new power supply.

I think I could upgrade to a better graphics card now too cause my PSU has multiple separate 6+2 pin connectors on it and I can just cut a rectangle out of the side cover of my pc or just go without side cover and the IO shield for a more powerful full size graphics card to go. and then hook the power connectors up and get even more performance

I think it'd be better to just upgrade my case and motherboard though cause I found a good deal for Z77 motherboard on ebay and cheap case on newegg for under 100$ total and then I could fit a full size graphics card in without any modifications. and even be able to overclock my CPU and ram too!

Hi realflow100,

Im in USA though!

A forum is a forum for Q&A's!
If you look through the threads/posts, there might be something that is useful!
You could always join and ask the question [stating that you are in the USA], I am sure it is not soley for the UK!

I hope this helps!

I'm just wondering why the new power supply works so much better to the point my graphics card can even overclock higher than before and its only using PCIe x16 power no extra power connectors.

I was wondering what make/model power supply you were now using?

A Small Form Factor (SFF) case is not the best case to use, should you be trying overclocking your components. They really do not have that much ventilation, and warm air is not dissipated that efficiently, and when you overclock, more heat is generated, faster.

However, because you are running the PSU outside the case/have case lid off, that the components dissipate heat quicker, and thus your overclocks are more stable - just a thought.

Definitely not a temperature issue for sure
GPU temp never changed at all before and after upgrading the PSU cause the driver crash would happen at any time at any temperature. and much sooner if the overclock is higher. temperature not being a factor at all GPU under 50*C it'd still crash
identical temps for CPU too. so thats not it.

but now it doesnt matter if my GPU gets up to 75*C its still stable no crashes or problems.
and with a higher overclock than before too.
my CPU normally doesnt get much above 50 to 60*C when playing really intensive games and programs
and idles around 25 to 40*C

Well, the GPU temp would most surely change if you try overclock it, so I would refrain from saying 'definitely not'.

but if its getting hotter than previous overclock and still not crashing. that still means its working better with the new power supply and not a heat issue with the previous power supply. it must of been something else causing it to crash. like the old power supply wasnt good enough/stable with my graphics card overclocked
but my new power supply is so much better that it doesnt crash when i overclock even higher than before. even with the temperature slightly hotter than before too

I think I am with you now! Your saying that the computer with old PSU would crash out before the temperatures got the chance to increase. So now you are able to overclock at even higher temperatures than before, with the new PSU. Then I agree that this new PSU is even better than before. Does that answer your question?

yes but I just am confused why it behaves like that its really weird cause I thought PCIe x16 was limited to 75W with ANY power supply

my only idea is there was some kind of voltage drop or poor regulation of some kind in the old power supply and it couldn't give out the full power to the graphics card and other critical components causing the GPU driver to crash sometimes.

and the new power supply is so much beefier that it keeps the voltage and regulation much better enough that theres no voltage drop or power loss for the PCIe x16 graphics card slot and so it handles things much better somehow with higher overclock and stuff on my graphics card.
