Hey Welcome aboard the Se7enforums! Pyronox

For the supply on any build that will depend mainly on the type of build and the hardwares as well as adding more drives and devices on that will be seen. That wpn't have any direct bearing on 7 for that matter since some are running 7 on old boats seeing less then 512mb of memory and likely a 300w supply if that just to see if 7 will run.

A good mid range build at this time would see a good start with a 500-700w supply for running stock as long as the amps on the 12v rails are adequate when running a higher end card with 4gb+ of memory being what most look at to start with when selecting the 64bit Windows.

With 5 hard drives in and running the 64bit 7 as the primary OS the present 700w supply is more then enough here with a mid range video card. That even includes the occasional boot from usb flash drives as well.

I've been extremely happy with my corsair HX series power supply. The modular power supplies are fantastic for reducing cable clutter, keeping cases neater and providing better airflow to your components.

Other great names include Antec, Seasonic, PC Power and Cooling.

...and as for ram, it looks like this board supports DDR3 1600, 1333 or 1066.

i would say you should get at least 4 gigs of the stuff.

i would agree with pparks1 as to a modular power supply - so much less clutter without extraneous cables dangling about the place!

I tend to agree with the 2gb dimms over rushing at the 4gb dimms at this point unless you are going to getting into Cad or some other large programs, working with video etc. simply until you know what you will be running.

I was certainly considering a Phenom II X4 model cpu for the build I put off until 2010 due to the new USB 3.0 standard coming in. So far the OCZ 700w supply has done well with all the drives and addons. 7 itself however is geared to be a little more energy efficient depending the power plan you use or create there.

Welcome to the forum, my build is very similar to what you are planning.
An old maxim, "It better to have to much power than later on you wish you did." So anywhwere from 550 watt to 750 watt will be adequate.
The on board grafix card is adequate and I use it in dvi for hdd. I would suggest a blu ray player in addition, I would also recommend a TB of storage, I started w/a .5 TB but my video work eats drive space fast.
Your MOBO is set up for the new ddr 3 memory stick and I paid $90 for 4 megs. I will add that windows 7 x64 has been very well supported especially here. So if you need any help we are all standing by 10/10 on the side.

ok here goes .... my desktop is back in dubai. . If i wont be able to get a whole new rig (that is if i wait for the usb version 3 like night hawk, and probably wait for the new processors to hit the market and their rates to stabilize) i want to atleast replace a few parts for my current system.

And here are the current specs

Vista Ultimate x64
Intel Core 2 Duo E4500
Asus P5K-E Wifi-AP
1GB DDR2 X4
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4870
Benq 19" Wide
1440x900

250 GB SATA Seagate
160 GB SATA Seagate
1 TB WD My Book (External)

Razer Deathadder + Razer Destructor (Mouse pad)

so what components should i et in order to max out performance on the current mobo.

i will be looking into the new spec mentioned above as well. But i provide first priority to my old pc.

if it isnt broken then why chuck it away probably boost the performance further

SuperSpeed USB 3.0 FAQ explains quite a bit on USB 3.0 there. That will still take time before you start seeing new 3.0 devices on the market. And present 2.0 devices will still work while waiting for the new Super USB as they call it there.

The present board will run 2gb dimms as well as the four 1gb dimms you already have in. That would max the memory out to 8gb. As far as the present cpu and plans to run the new Virtual PC and XP Mode you will want to download the tool for that to see if the present model cpu supports virtualization. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/support/configure-bios.aspx

Asus has most of their recent model boards already enabled for virtualization by default it seems. As for performance you will find that 7 will be a large noticable difference on the exact same hardwares where you have already been running the 64bit Vista Ultimate.
