Solved New ssd clean install how to clone the rest from old drive?

To be honest if I am going to tweek things i would rather do them myself then have some program do it for me. This way I learn something so maybe I can fix a issue later or who knows what other reason it may help doing it myself. Obviously most people have issues with computers most of them by now I can handle myself without coming on here begging for help. I hate asking for help. Plus I keep having to find new forums to get any help. I went to a couple of my old forums and asked the same thing with no responses. It seems the people willing to help are diapering. I worry one day forums will be gone. soon I also need to find a forum that will help building a new computer for my repair shop. The last forum that helped build this one is one I am not getting responses on anymore. :(

I actually run my own forum. cyberpcforum.com There's also overclock.net. Not mine though.

You mentioned that your MSI MB has a BIOS you never seen before.
If your MB has a UEFI BIOS, Win 7 64 bits can be installed as Legacy-MBR or UEFI-GPT
To install as Legacy-MBR you MUST boot the Win 7 installation disk as Legacy.
To install as UEFI-GPT you MUST boot the Win 7 installation disk as UEFI.

Please give us the model of your MSI MB so we can find what BIOS you have.

Detach ALL other disks (SATA or power cable) from the MB and do a Clean Install. If the SSD has a formatted partition, delete all partitions on the disk and then proceed.
Once win 7 is installed, open device manager and install all missing drivers.

For the updates, use Simplix MS releases SP2 for Windows 7

After Win 7 64 bits install, attach the old disk to the MB.
To move your files from the older disk to the new one, just copy them.
They are under X:\Users\Luiz\Documents, X:\Users\Luiz\Music etc

To move the Firefox settings from the old disk to the new one:
- Install Firefox
- On the old disk, go to X:\Users\Name\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\XXXXXXX.default and copy all files and folders. Go to go to C:\Users\Name\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ZZZZZZZ.default, delete all files and folders and paste the files and folders from the old disk.
Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles | Firefox Help

You can use this tool to backup Firefox settings
Firefox Backup Tool

Firefox DIRs are the easiest to copy from source onto target. IE's easiest DIR to work with is Windows\Favorites. Chrome -- I don't remember the EZ DIRs.

Thank you guys I appreciate the help! Working on getting all updates and drivers on the new hard drive right now. I just now got to a point I can get on the net and login here to see everything you guys have helped with so I get it fresh in my memory again lol Will be working on that once all the updates are done.

I went and checked out your forum quick. I see a place to post PC builds. You will probably gain a member soon once i get this computer back in shape. I don't know any other forums to go for that. I have a list of parts I think will work but maybe not work well or the way I think they will. Compatibility is not so hard anymore but just because they plug in and turn on does not mean it is a quality system or there is not bottle necking happening or work the way I think it will. Other people with experience seem to know that much better then I. As last time My parts picked would have worked but not the best for what I planned to do.

Make sure that after you install Windows you right click the hard drive in My computer and turn off defragging. You never EVER defrag a SSD or any flash-based storage for that matter. They don't need it due to the way they operate and are made. It's not mechanical storage where data can get fragmented.

Something else to consider is to also turn off the indexing service and use Everything.exe to search for files. This program is a very powerful and fast searching tool to find things on your computer. By turning off the indexing service you help save on unnecessary writes to a finite write cycle SSD. Downloads - voidtools

Edit I found it and got it disabled.

Ok I went into my computer and right clicked. I can't find any way to turn off defrag. I went threw properties and the only thing that says anything about defrag is to start defragging. I have to be missing something? Or i am blind.

Windows defrag has a schedule. Just disable it. When SSDs are detected, schedule won't run for them.

Well bad news maybe. My old drive is not showing up when i plug it back in. Is there anything I can do about it? Or am I just doing something wrong? I shut the computer down and just plugged it back into the same SATA cable it use to be plugged into. Never unplugged power cable.

Well That was one of the forums I have not been getting responses from anymore. Altho not in the PC build section recently. They did help me build this very computer. They had helped me a ton in the past. One of my favorite go to forums. Very good at removing bad things from a computer. In fact many years ago I loaned a computer to a person I shouldn't of and apparently he watched a lot of adult content and filled the computer ridiculously full of viruses and malware. They helped me work on that thing for weeks! But the last couple of posts never got a response. Henc why I joined here in the first place.

Newegg Also helped build this PC. But i cannot find that forum anymore. Not sure what happen there.

I have tried all 3 of my SATA cables I have extra. Didn't work. They do work with my backup drive tho. BIOS does not show it either. I did put my hand on it this last time to feel it. It does try to spin up and it does some clicking while windows is loading from my SSD.

Yep pretty much what I figured. On the bright side Some of what i wanted was on my backup drive. Now after getting all of it backed up I got most of my bookmarks back except for Chromes. When I look for Chromes it seems to not be where it should be. I found a bookmarks file but it shows nothing and that it is a hole 12kb.

Now more fun is i got all my photos videos music and documents off my backup drive so I got my external backup drive to update it and get some of the missing data from it back on my computer. That turned into a mess. Some how I ended up with 2 similar copies of everything on my computer each from a different time frame so they are not matched copies and I got 2 similar copies on my external drive. I have no idea what I messed up there but now the fun of consolidating all the actual files within 1 folder for each type of pictures then get all them folders back in there right place on the computer and on the external hard drive. Did i mention I hate computers? lol I thought i was just moving the files from my computer onto the external drive and being there was already many of the same files already on the external drive it would just give me that warning of the duplicates. but still add the files that was not there. I had it figured out the last time i updated the external drive but clearly did something wrong this time.

Again thanks for all your help everyone! Granted my old drive seems to be dead you still helped in getting my bookmarks for firefox and IE from my backup since the backup did not automatically put them into place. Also helped me setup the SSD correctly. Glad I joined!
