My current drive C is a 120GB SSD drive with windows 7 installed. I'm getting a new 1TB SSD for drive C to replace my current drive.

I will probably move my 120GB drive to another slot and make it drive D.

My question is, do I have to remove windows 7 from my 120GB if I make it drive D. My gut says I don't have to remove windows but I wanted to be sure.

Your gut is correct. It could be used as something to boot into if your new install has major issues some time in the future.

Some people clone their installation to second hard drive as a backup for the same reason.

It's good to have Windows and programs on a small SSD and and move C:\users to another drive (D:\users).
The main advantage is that you can do a clean install without loosing your data and settings.

To move C:\users to D:\users use Kari tutorial. If you interest I can guide you.

No, no clash, do mine that way! You can dual boot also, yes I do mine that way too!
Then, if I wish, I delete quite a bit & keep the library folders structure, etc. making it data only.
Nope won't boot if you really strip it.

My question is, do I have to remove windows 7 from my 120GB if I make it drive D. My gut says I don't have to remove windows but I wanted to be sure.

I know there must be exceptions, but, what decides which HD of several installed drives will boot the PC, depends on the Bios and the number of the SATA port that a drive is plugged into.
Typically, the bios will boot the PC from the drive on Port 0 (zero) on the motherboard.

I have five HD's mounted inside my Mid-Tower Case, (two SSD's and three spinners) and each one can boot up the PC. But to eliminate the possibility of a logic log jam, and one OS messing with another one, I only plug in the drive I want to work with. I know, that probably sounds overly simplistic, but what the hey.... It works for me.
And, (old railroad saying) "never the trains shall meet". ;)

And, for storage, and backups, I use external HD's, on a USB 3.0 port. I have a 1TB Toshiba drive, and an 8TB Seagate drive, and also a 128GB PNY Flash Drive.
I really try to 'Practice what I preach'. (Backup! Backup! Backup!)

I'm not immune to HD crashes....heaven only knows, I've had my share. But in decades, I've not lost one BIT of data, due to a very aggressive Backup regimen.

I envy you that new SSD. They really ARE fast! I have four of them, in three different PC's, and they are all the 128GB variety. Big enough for everyday computing.

Happy Thanksgiving Mate!
