Solved New Video Card caused high CPU usuage coming out of low power state

I recently updated my graphics card to GeForce GTX 650 Ti on my custom built machine. Now, whenever computer enters, and then comes back out of standy, or hibernation, it causes CPU usage to jump to around 90 - 100% and makes computer unusable to say the least. (Note: CPU not GPU)

First what I've tryed:

- All drivers, for all cards, are up to date
- Did a clean reinstall of Windows 7
- Flash BIOS to most recent version (which unfortunately is 2012)
- Updated Chipset drivers for motherboard
- Ran a performance test, test couldn't make it pass the 3D Graphics portion, it caused the same high CPU usage.

What I haven't tryed:

- Installing card in another computer (not really an option for me right now)
- Checking PSU


The performance test I used was from Passmark and it makes me suspect something is up with DirectX11 when it failed the 3D portion. Does anyone have any other ideas or troubleshooting I can try?

have you gone into task manager to see what process is causing the high cpu usage?

thats about the only way youll find out.

chances are its a windows related program, so make sure you have the latest windows service pack and that its up to date.

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
This sounds very very weird due to that the problem is keeping on going even after a clean windows install. Try downloading a gpu stress test and a monitoring program and see if you can put the gpu to 100%. If not then it can be a result of cpu bottlenecking. But your cpu is more then enough horsepower in to power that card.
I have never encountered anything like this. So after all its probably a pretty strange hardware problem .
On memory, What RAM speeds are you getting?
I will do more research on this but provide me with this info:
Ram speeds,
PSU wattage,
Gpu possible to hit 100%?
Any overclocks i should know about?

Edit: Also do the same as that guy told you to do

Thanks for the quick responses

I did in fact get to look at the process involved in task manager, however it took forever to get there with the high CPU usage.

"interrupts system deferred procedure calls" was the culprit using 90% of my CPU. Which, after a quick Google, makes me even more confused.

- Service Packs are up to date
- PSU is Thermaltake 500W edit: it is actually Ultra X4 1050W
- Nothing is overclocked

I'll work on getting the RAM speeds and doing a GPU stress test.

Thanks for the link badger906, I used the program and all was green, then I forced the computer into sleep mode, when it came out of sleep, the DPC Latency Checker was in the red over 16000, but then jumped back to green and stayed there.

If I understand the program right, I am to disable drivers until I find the one causing the problem. However, I know the problem lies somewhere within the new graphics card installation. And I know that whether it's a windows installed driver or Nvidia installed driver the problem persists. Is there a way to find the conflict without going through all disabling/enabling?

Sometimes I can get the problem to repeat, sometimes I can't. The only constant I can say is it ONLY happens when it comes out of sleep or hibernation. I can restart computer and the thing runs like a champ all day. Leave it on all night, and as soon as i start a video, drafting program, game, blender, any kind of graphics program...it just falls on it's face with a system interrupts.

Another thing I've tryed...

I downloaded the Windows Performance Toolkit and tryed to record using the Windows Performance Recorder. Since I'm using 64 bit version, it had to disable the Paging Executive. I tryed to run the Passmark test previously mentioned again, to record where my last CPU usage got high, and it went through with no problems this time.

I thought I had stumbled onto something by having the Paging Executive disabled but after reenabling it I was still able to pass the test. Not able to recreate problem.

Update:

It no longer seems like it only happens coming out of low power state now. I've had it happen several times just using web browser. I've uninstalled drivers again, reseated video card, and reinstalled drivers. We'll see if the reseat is a possible fix.

Shouldn't matter which PCIe x16 slot i use should it? And shouldn't matter if my MOBO is PCIe 2.0 and the new card is version 3.0 should it? Should be backwards compatible.

I'll keep the board updated to hopefully help other users as well, and any other tricks to try are appreciated.

Check if you got any new mobo drivers
Get Nvidia Geforce Experience. It will give you the latest drivers
The Pci-e 2.0 is more than enough bandwith in to take care of that card but if you have an PCI-E 3.0 use that instead.
BUT BE SURE! That the PCI-E port is 16x! Very important! check your mobo manual if you got one. Otherwise check the internet or look if the mobo has text next to the pci port. it usally says PCI-E 16x or PCI-E 1x etc..

You are using the GTX 650Ti in the blue PCI-E 16x slot?
If not do so.
Also. All graphics cards are backwards compatible but some may not be able to be used to its full potential. But the PCI-e 2.0 is cabable of ~8Gb/s gpu's and a GTX 660 ( that i have ) is running ram speeds up to ~6Gb/S so you really dont need PCI-E 3.0 unless you run a crazy fast and high end gpu

All in all, so far no massive CPU usage since reseating, fingers crossed that's all it needed.
